OK here goes...my problem is that I can't get my remote assistance to work nor can I get the microphone to work in msn messenger.

Now...this is something new!! It used to work (I used the remote with a member here) before I did "some" things...I recently restored windows, uninstalled aol, uninstalled msn messenger, uninstalled Mozilla Firefox and reinstalled everything back. My idea was that this would help!! But it didn't. Everything works great but these two features.

I also uninstalled Norton Antivirus from my pc.

I have Windows Xp Home edition and I use Mozilla firefox.

I have a router but that was being used before... when RA worked...so it can't be that.

I'm guessing that a firewall somewhere is blocking RA from working ...but where could it be? I turned off Windows firewall to see if RA would work then, but it didn't. Yes I turned it back on since!! LOL!

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'll try anything...I like for everything to work!
I'm getting obsessed with this now...I know you guys can help!!

Thanks so much!!

I'm going to ask a dumb question--remote is on, right?

Right click MY COMPUTER, choose PROPERTIES, choose REMOTE tab.

Also, start > run
services.msc
enter

look at remote---what are the startup types for anything that begins REMOTE

could you please tell me which ones are automatic and which ones are normal

should be six of them with the following auto

remote access auto connection manager
remote procedure call
remote registry

oterh three are manual?

You say it is off....how do you know it is off? Are you unable to establish a connection?

What version do you have of msn messenger? Are you signed on?

Could you please run a hijackthis log and post it here-- I AM NOT LOOKING FOR MALWARE,,,,just want to see what programs are running.

Thanks again Gerry!!!!

OK, I see one problem maybe!! I don't have Remote Registry!!
I have the rest and they are on what you say...either Manual or Auto.

I use msn Messenger 7.0

I don't know what you mean by me saying something is off. When I am signed into msn messenger, and so is the person who I invite to use remote assis. it will not establish a connection. And he has tried his RA with other people, and his works...mine won't!

Here is my log:

don't worry about remote registry---windows xp pro service and not something you want anyway..

looking over what you wrote, I think I have found the issue

I use msn Messenger 7.0

not sure how you uninstalled messenger, but I think it probably took a file with it that msn messenger did not replace.

So, download windows messenger 5.1 and install it,
http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en

then reinstall msn messenger 7.0
http://messenger.msn.com/

msn messenger 7.0 lacks some of the files needed for remote desktop to work

Sorry it took so long to get back.

I downloaded windows 5.1 and installed it.
then I uninstalled 7.0
then I rebooted
then reinstalled 7.0 again

I tried again with RA. I invited someone and an error message comes up for them. I know for a fact that the problem is on my end..not his.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much!!!

Since the reinstall, did you turn your Windows firewall off when you tried that last invitation?

Not since the last install, no...but before, I have tried using RA with the Windows Firewall off...yes! It didn't work. ;)

I will try tomorrow and let you know what happens!!! :tazz:

But...this is why I am thinking that there is another firewall blocking this...I could be wrong.

Thanks for your help Greazy!!!

Gooing back to that first part, you did something...then you did some other things, trying to fix that....what was that SOMETHING?

When you attempt a remote connection, what occurs on your end and the other?

Finally, what kind of router?

Hi Gerry!!

When I invite my friend via RA this is what he sees:

From HIS end, initially HE sees a "Help and Support" window open and the words "Attempting to connect to..."

HE then looks at the transmit and receive flashing lights in the task bar, they flash intermittently, several times, until the window changes with words to the effect "A connection was not possible, could not resolve remote address"

On MY end...I see nothing but the message in the chat area..it says that I invited HIM and that he Accepted. I get no message after that...but...I can hear my computer trying to make the connection!!!

The router says Wireless Access Point Router with 4 pt switch, 2.4 GHZ Its a Linksys

Thanks again for your help!!!
