What is XP Security 2012?

The Malwarebytes research team has determined that XP Security 2012 is a fake anti-malware application. These so-called "rogues" use intentional false positives to convince users that their systems have been compromised. Then they try to sell you their software, claiming it will remove these threats. In extreme cases the false threats are actually the very trojans that advertise or even directly install the rogue. You are strongly advised to follow our removal instructions below.

How do I know if I am infected with XP Security 2012?

I downloaded malwarebytes anti-malware, was unable to open the mbam-setup. I tried several times but was denied access. The rogue malware is now blocking all my programs except Firefox browser and OE email.

I would like to add that it's also possible to execute your .exe files by right-clicking them and choosing either Run as administrator or Start from the menu, instead of renaming them to .com.

Quite a task for the lesser techs around. Maybe this regfix can help. Just open notepad and paste the code below. Then save as exe_fix.reg and doubleclick to execute.

exe_fix.reg
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe]
 @="exefile"
 "Content Type"="application/x-msdownload"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe\PersistentHandler]
 @="{098f2470-bae0-11cd-b579-08002b30bfeb}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command]
 @="\"%1\" %*"
 "IsolatedCommand"="\"%1\" %*"
