My NOD32 popped up tonight and warned me about some potentially unwanted application, and it said it was a variant of win32 something or other, can't remember. I told it to clean it, and I guess it did. Then I deleted it from quarantine. The funny thing is I think I picked up something from some freeware I downloaded that was supposed to be spyware/virus free, but I accidentally clicked on the install that included a bunch of crap with it.....they had it greyed out and I missed it. Anyway, it changed my homepage on my browsers, etc, etc.....you know the drill. I uninstalled it, got rid of the extras it installed with it, and did a system restore, and figured it was gone. I wish I had saved the text from the ESET log to post the name of it, but it was in C:\system volume....and then restore something or other, but it ended with a A0004562.exe if that helps. It popped up a window last night and it was the same thing, but ended with a A0004433.exe

Anyway, I've posted an OTL log and an Extras log. Maybe NOD32 got rid of it, but I thought that the other day. Not sure exactly what to look for either. Thanks in advance!

I ran an i depth scan with NOD32 last night after my first post, and it didn't find anything, so I don't if it's gone or??

The area that Eset highlighted is the system restore element - so I can reset them for you if you wish. Once this has completed let me know if you have any other problems

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [emptytemp]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

But, last time I did the system restore, I turned off system restore after doing so, then turned it back, so their shouldn't be any old restore points. Is this something different?

Nope it was just to ensure that the old restore point was gone as I did not know you had done that

Any further problems ?

No, not yet. The weird part was that the ESET window popped up late last night, out of nowhere, told me about the file, and I had the option to clean it, which of course I did. Funny it took a day or so to "see" it. To me anyway. If it was part of one of the old restore points, isn't it technically still in the system if I turned system restore off, then back on?

I still did what you said with OTL and the fix though.

No that will remove it, as turning off restore deletes all restore points. When Eset cleaned it the restore point was actually broken and unusable

If it is OK tomorrow then run OTL and hit the cleanup button to remove the programme

The area that Eset highlighted is the system restore element

Can I ask why NOD32 found something in the system restore element a good or so AFTER I had tuned system restore off and back on, thus eliminating all restore points? Just seems odd, but I just simply don't know that much about that.

That may suggest that there was a residue of the infection on your system, that was backed up when system restore was restarted

Ah....o.k. Well, the NOD32 window hasn't popped up, and last nights scan didn't find anything, so most likely it's gone, I'd say.
