dvd ripping vs dvd copying

HI TO ALL GEEKS..... im just wondering when i tried to copy and paste the movie content of my dvd to my computer it worked and i was able to watched it on my computer even without the dvd.... that dvd is from readers digest that was gift to me for subscribing to them.... but why most of the movie on dvd now that im trying to simply copy and paste it again i cant do it anymore..... why some will work by just copy and paste while most will not work that way??? whats the difference??? thanks

Copy/paste to your computer's hard drive only works if the DVD content is not copy-protected.
Commercial DVD movies are copy-protected with some form of encryption to prevent them being copied.
