Office Dell Computer Freezing and Crashing

Hi there, I work for a small business office, and our office computer (a Dell desktop running Windows 2000), keeps freezing and crashing, especially when anyone opens Microsoft Outlook and attempts to hit the "send a new message" icon. Any idea what is the matter and or how we can improve this computer's minimal performance?

I should add: We have tried restarting it (doesn't help) and removing unnecessary programs from the add/remove programs menu, but that didn't help, either. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Please do the following. :)


1.Would you please tell me which antivirus applications you have had previously on this machine any and all.The reason I ask is because some like to hang around after you uninstall via add remove programs and require the use of removal tools.



2.Download CCLEANER from the link below:

Just DONT us the registry cleaner function of CCleaner unless you know what you are deleting exactly!!

Then open ccleaner hit the tools button then startup second one down below uninstall then in the bottom right hand corner of ccleaner hit save to text file.Save it to your desktop and post the startup.txt here in your next reply.


3.Hit the start button in lower left hand corner. Then in the run box type msconfig , then hit the services tab then put a check mark in hide microsoft services what is listed there,after hiding microsoft services?Please post back to us in a vertical list.

4.Please download MiniToolBox HERE http://download.blee...MiniToolBox.exe When the box opens click save file, save it to the desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following boxes:


Flush Dns
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
Click Go and post the result.

5.What kind of computer do you have exactly?Make model?Example Compaq Presario C700 You have a dell desktop,but which model and also the service tag number please. The link below explains where to find your service tag.

Unplug the tower open up the side.Get can of compressed air and blow out the machine and reseat the ram modules video card etc,see video Plug it back in and see how it goes.





I want to make one thing very clear DO NOT use the registry cleaner function of ccleaner!!

5. After inspection, I don't think it is a true dell, just in a dell shell. The service number found was TP423892. Here is a screen shot of the My Computer properties if that helps.

Hit start button at lower left hand corner of the screen.Then in the run box type services.msc. Find the service listed below,one at a time. left click it once you should have the option to either stop the service or restart it , stop the service then right click selected service select properties then change the startup type to manual then left click apply and move on to the next service.If the service is stopped and the startup type is manual then do nothing.

Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.

Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
right-click Run as Admin on TFC.exe to run it.If tfc doesnt prompt a reboot then do so manually.

Next run the tools below.

The system was still a little "laggy", so I uninstalled "dropbox" which was installed just prior to the system lagging and crashing. Will post if it makes a difference.

Uninstall the following programs.
Java™ 6 Update 3 (Version: 1.6.0.30)
Java™ 6 Update 5 (Version: 1.6.0.50)
Symantec KB-DocID:2003093015493306 (did you run the norton uninstaller?)
LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation) (Version: 3.0.0.166)
Norton Security Scan (Version: 2.7.0.52)

I dont see an antivirus you said you dont use norton anymore.Winpatrol isnt an antivirus.
Try avast as I suggested.Also did you update to sp3?

Have you completed all of my instructions??

Get an updated copy of java here.

I uninstalled the programs you listed.

I ran the Norton and AVG uninstallers, just after the MiniToolBox because it was lower on the list so maybe that is why you didn't see it. I also installed Avast.

Also got the updated copy of java.

Still crashing when trying to send a new mail message in outlook. Can forward mail without a problem, just on new mail. Should I try to uninstall/reinstall outlook? Other than that, the computer lag has gotten much better.

Yes go ahead and uninstall/reinstall outlook.Also did you update to sp3 yet if not then please do so.Also here are a couple of great free programs to keep your pc running smoothly.Just update prior to use if you do decide to use them,also disable them from startup with ccleaner unless you plan to purchase,because the free versions do not have realtime protection.The choice is yours if you wish to use these,I am in no way telling you to post the logs that they create here. The last thing I would like you to do is run check disk. open command prompt and type chkdsk /r See post #2 for more detailed instuctions.Also an update on the situation would be nice. :)
