My laptop screen turns white sometimes, does anyone know the reason why it does this?

There is more than one possible cause and amongst them are heat, a failing video chip or video ribbon, flaky Ram or power issues so it is a process of elimination.
Would it be possible for you to connect the laptop to an external screen and see if the issue occurs! You may need to toggle between the screens using the Fn and one of the F1 to F12 keys or it may be a single function key along the top and it may have an image of a monitor on it.

Thanks for the reply. My laptop is currently working, the screen turns white sometimes, for example when I switch it back on from sleep/standby.

If I switch to an external monitor than I will have to wait for the white screen to come up.

I recently changed the Windows 7 Aero Desktop themes and the issue seems to be solved. I will still wait and see if the problem persists.

I have suggested this to another member only recently so well done for being one step ahead
The idea was to reduce the demands on the Ram and GPU and disabling Aero was enough to do that, the long term answer was upgrading the Ram.

No the idea here is to try and eliminate the video ribbon and laptop screen as the cause of the issue, if the problem does move to the external screen then the video chip may be the cause, it may even be getting hot, have you ever cleaned out the inside of the case? This is tricky if you havn`t but I will guide you on "how to".

I recently bought the laptop. I used dust-off compressed air to clear the fans from any dust. But, I have had the laptop for about 4 weeks. So the problem obviously triggered after the application of dust-off.

If the video ribbon is possibly damaged then the screen would flicker often, when I start the Operating System the laptop does flicker white, and then it turns black before going on to the main logon page. I tried moving the laptop lid back and fourth but the screen remains switched on with no problems. The only possible cause for this can either be the graphics card overheating or something to do with the power.

I have also recently have had the laptop switched on overnight for over 6 hours. The charger is also temperamental so I have to adjust it a bit to get the battery to charge. Also, when I bought the laptop, the battery was dead, so I bought a new one and now it seems to work perfectly.

Maybe it could be because of the drivers installed (graphics card, BIOS, chipset etc). I will try to connect it to an external monitor and will report back to you ASAP.

Did you remove the Ram stick/s, blow out the slot/s then replace the Ram securely?

The charger is also temperamental so I have to adjust it a bit to get the battery to charge

I strongly suggest that you replace this as a matter of urgency because if it goes it will wipe out your MB, with what you have now said the screen and ribbon are less likely but dust and power more likely and put the two together and you get heat which kills components.

Thanks for the reply. By switching off the Windows Aero Theme, the white screen issue is resolved. You will no longer get the white screen.

P.S this worked for me but if it doesn't work for anyone else than there could be problems mentioned by phillpower2.
