Hello, I have been trying to help my friend. She somehow contracted a worm on her computer. I ran adaware, microsoft antispyware, CleanUp40, and I downloaded Xoft Spy and ran that. Xoft Spy found the worm. Under vendor it says mugly, under type it says file, under category it says worm, under object it says c:\windows\system32\bszip\dll. Xoft Spy will get rid of it, and adaware finds 11 to 15 critical threats and deletes them. But, when you re-start the computer, the worm and the critical threats are back. We've re-run these 4 programs for the last 12 hours trying to get rid of them. Any other suggestions?

Hi Eyther,

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

First,
Click Here to download TheKillbox. Extract TheKillBox.exe from the zip file and double click it to open it up. In the 'Enter Full Path and Filename to Delete' box, copy and paste these entries one by one, clicking 'Find and Kill This File' after each one:

C:\Program Files\winupdate\winupdate.exe /auto
c:\windows\system32\bszip.dll

Click 'Exit' when done.

Note: If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, download and run: http://www.javacools...ngfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Second,
Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes
next to all the entries listed below.

Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

P2P Networking ---->It is strongly recommend you uninstall/remove the P2P program you currently have installed. It leaves you open to a huge threat of being infected/hijacked again.



Third,
Please follow the instructions provided, you may want to print out these instructions and use them as a reference.


Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop

Fourth,
Reboot your machine and post back a new HJT log and the ewido .txt log file you saved by using Add Reply

Thank you so much for your help. Just to let you know, when I ran the killbox program and used the file name....C:\Program Files\winupdate\winupdate.exe/auto, the program says that file doesn't seem to exist. I went to the site you listed for javacoolsoftware and downloaded it and re-ran the killbox, and it said the same thing.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.

• Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  
• AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  
• SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  
• SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  
• IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  
• CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  
• Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
