I just purchased a new acer aspire netbook. The windows on it says windows 7 starter. I have never seen that before. Does that mean it doesn't have a complete version on this operating system. Also when I purchased it they wanted to optimize it for a fee because they said it was not very fast unless that was done. It has 1 GB of memory and 250 GB HDD. If that is the case how can I optimize it.

Thanks

Here is some info on Windows 7 Starter Edition: What is Windows 7 Starter Edition?

There is not a lot you can do to optimize it on a netbook.

1. Add more ram if possible
2. Disable some of the programs that start when the computer boots.
3. Replace Norton or McAfee Anti-virus with Microsoft Security Essentials.

Thank you for the quick reply. I read that article and it really helps to understand. I am happy with this system so I can do without the great speed as I have another computer. Thanks again.

I just sold my acer aspire one simply because even with 2 gigs of memory and deleting all the programs that i would never use it was still pretty slow compared to my 2 year old toshiba 505 laptop. It's great if you want a very small laptop to carry around with you, but it is not a everyday type of computer. Read the manual on replacing the memory and when you do you will still break off some of the clips that hold the plastic bottom piece on. Just take your time and keep working on prying it off with a table knife. I broke 2 clips but you can't tell by looking at the laptop. The bottom still fits well and is not loose. I used a small phillips screwdriver to stick in the hole acer put in the lower right bottom, under the keyboard, to push the bottom out enough to start prying with the kitchen knife. The plastic piece holding the keyboard in at the top can be pryed out to flop the keyboard over and out of the way. I did not even disconnect the ribbon cable from the keyboard or laptop motherboard as i did not know if i would be able to connect it back up correctly.

I want this just for when I travel. I was able to put my magic jack on and that was one of the main purposes of this. I have a laptop but find it very heavy to carry around. Thank you for the info as I wll keep it for future reference.

Windows 7 Starter is the introductory edition of Windows 7, it does not support Aero Glass graphics, Fast User Switching, cannot create HomeGroups (but can join them), cannot change the desktop background, supports a screen resolution of 1024 by 768 max, targeted mainly for Netbooks and budget PC's with certain processor models such as the Intel ATOM, AMD Sempron, only available in 32 bit, Windows 7 Starter is not sold as a retail license it is a OEM license that is preloaded on computers.

You can run Windows Live Mail on Windows 7 Starter. you can run office student and home also( it usually come as a trial on most netbooks).

There is not any real good reason to run Win 7 home premium on a netbook simply because the processor is not really fast enough and there is a 2 gig memory limit in the BIOS on netbooks. Home premium will slow the computer down a little bit.

The acer will use a external dvd player and has a program that will let you make a set of recovery dvd's. I made a set from my aspire netbook and then used them to reinstall the OS. I had put a game on the hd to see if it was gone after the restore(factory) and it was not on the drive anymore. I did not have to install any programs on the netbook because windows already has the software to burn dvd's.

Thank you so much for the info. I will get an external dvd burner and back up the system. I will not even try to put windows 7 OS as I think this will work just fine for me. Again thanks for the quick reply and the help. Great site.
