My laptop will not turn on properly. When I try to turn it on it goes to a black screen with letters and asks me to choose if I want to restart normally or start in safe mode. I've chosen all the options but the result is the same, it looks like it's turning on and then it just turns off and turns on again and goes back to that same screen, and keeps doing the same over and over again.

While it's trying to boot another black screen comes on where it says ..."WINDOWS\Systen32\DRIVERS\...) repeatedly and the last part is the only thing that changes, like "disk.sys", KSecDD.sys"

When I tried to start it in recovery mode, a blue screen appears that says,
"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut doen to prevent damage to your computer.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"

Please help

P.S. I really need to recover picture I have on the laptop, that is my main worry :o

1. Are you able to say what you were doing just before this problem started and when did it start please - the problem.

2, Please post the make and full model of the computer

3, Please confirm that the O/S is XP and if so do you know which

4. Do you have any disc eg. the recovery disc etc that came with the computer - if any did.

5. Do you have another computer, on which you can BURN a CD. Obviously you have one otherwise you could not be posting, but does it have an optical drive and do you have writeable Cd`s

Further to the above - I have signed off now. It is 0140hrs in the UK.
When you reply and if that makes it possible, I will send you details of how to proceed in an attempt to recover your pictures.

I think you saw my first post, as you were online and viewing the thread, when I posted it.

There is a good chance, we can at least recover your images and any other personal data.
However you need to make a CD from a program I will send you,

1. The day before the problem occurred i was browsing the internet, watching some youtube videos, then I turned off the computer and the next day when I tried to turn it on, it would not connect to the internet, then I would turn it off, and then the booting problem began where it does not turn off completely.

2. Gateway model #:MA3

3. It says "Designed for Windows XP. Windows Vista compatible.

4. Yes I have the recovery disk, I had previously tried inserting it in the computer, but it did not work (the way I did it anyways)

5. Yes I have a computer where I can burn CDs from.

Here is your program to recover your data.
http://www.geekstogo...over-your-data/

The CD must be burnt using the program in the link.
It is an ISO image and normal burning software will not burn ISO images,

Follow the guide please, all the information on how to - is in the link.

Before you do that TRY this.
Shut down the laptop.
Disconnect the power lead.
Disconnect the battery lead
Hold down the power button for a full 20 seconds.- release the power button
Reconnect the power lead - but NOT the battery
Try and boot again.

If still no good proceed with Puppy to hopefully recover your data

Ok I did all those steps, I'm running the puppy CD on the laptop and everything's working fine (i think), I'm just having a hard time locating my pictures. I'm in my drive (SDA1), however there's a second one (SDA2), but I'm still looking for them

After you have mounted the drive (top of desktop) in the guide you are then presented with this.
You then open the drive(sda1 - bottom left of desktop) - do not forget ONE click NO double clicking in Puppy.

You will then find them most likely
For The Novice: The common path to your pictures, music, video, and documents folders is: Documents and Settings >> All Users (or each idividual name of each user. CHECK All Names!) >> Documents >> You will now see My Music, My Pictures, and My Videos.

WHILE YOU ARE IN PUPPY - Cancel that request if you read it re sda2 it is your recovery partition. Do not go in there.

I followed those steps exactly but it does not show my pictures, under a folder I found saying "my pictures" it only has a "sample pictures" folder inside. I can't find any of my personal documents, pictures or videos, just my programs installed on the laptop. And I have a different version from that screenshot, I have Slacko Puppy 5.3.1 which is the newest version, I don't know if that changes where my pictures are supposed to be located or did i install the wrong puppy?

I did not know it had changed the version
I am sure it will work the same
Have you mounted the drive and then opened it on the sda1
as shown.

It MAY be easier if you use the version that was recommended on the link

I presume you have NOT installed it, but simply run it in ram.
IF YOU HAVE installed it on your hard drive that is a totally different issue

Here is the version that was on the link but now on the sub link to older versions.

I take it you are pleased with the result so far?

WHEN you have them all secure.
Do this
Recovery Console Disc Image
http://www.thecomput...om/files/rc.iso

Here is the ISO burning program
http://sites.google....-console-for-xp

Using the links above make a recovery console CD.
Download the program from the first link and as it is an ISO image, just as Puppy was burn the CD., using the program in the second link which contains the instructions.

Insert the CD - and see if you can get a boot to the Recovery Console please.
If you do at the prompt
type this command
chkdsk C: /r note please the space between chkdsk and C and C: and the slash /r
When it completes exit the recovery console, take out the CD and see if you can get a boot to Windows, normal mode or Safe Mode.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE BELOW my time offline over the next few days.

I did that and after a while of processing it, this is the result:

CHDSK found and fixed one or more errors on the volume.
149107296 kilobytes total disk space.
604048 kilobytes are available.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
37276824 total allocation units on disk.
151012 allocation units available on disk.

What's next?

What's next?

Well NOW that very much depends on what the result of this was?

When it completes exit the recovery console, take out the CD and see if you can get a boot to Windows, normal mode or Safe Mode.

At the moment it is - are you doing this

OR THIS :help:
