Hiya Geeks!

I am in the midst of building my first computer...
Thanks to the Geeks who have gotten me this far!
(rshaffer61, phillpower2, Digerati, Troy & Artellos)

On my current computer, I am using XP 32 SP3.
I am very happy with it, and was initially reluctant
to consider any other OS. However, phillpower2
pointed out that a 64bit OS could use more RAM.

It seems that XP Pro is no longer sold by Microsoft?
And perhaps not to be supported for much longer?
I'm not interested in Vista or Win7, Just XP Pro 64.
Where should I buy a legitimate copy of XP Pro 64?

(I once bought a word processing program that turned
out to be an illegitimate copy; I really do not want to
go thru that fiasco again, especially with a new OS.)

I found one for a bit less on another site, but since I am unfamiliar with that site, I am reluctant to order with them...

I've ordered thru Amazon before, with no issue; but rarely thru a company selling via Amazon. I expect it'll be a safe bet.

Also, I realise you say that you are not interested in Vista or Windows7.
HOWEVER, and you mention the support cycle for XP.
Do you need to bear this in mind

I am a regular purchaser on Amazon.
I thought it was simply a marketplace - like ebay

Where sellers market their goods, albeit they arrive in Amazon packaging.

However there are still some less than satisfactory experiences on there.
My advice is to look at the sellers history of satisfaction from his previous customers.
Especially if there are those who have bought the item you are planning to buy.

I haven't been in to check them or my email in ages.
I did get them, and I did see your posts in time.

The copy I got turned out to be just fine, however,
I am now leaning towards Win7x64 anyhow, lol...
XP64 doesn't work with Silverlight, which is one
of the reason I got a new rig in the first place;
My last rig wouldn't run Silverlight either. >.<

I am still computing on my old rig, as it hasn't
died yet. I am taking my sweet time getting the
new one up and running. I'm clearly not in a rush.

btw, funny thing... it was only just this morning
that we were talking about taking a trip to Wales.
Then I visit here and see your Welsh Dragon PMs...
I look forward to seeing the land of good advice

Well I will stand corrected but I thought that as it is really only a browser plug-in and as I understand it is Microsofts version of Adobe AIR etc. it works on 64 bit Windows just as it works on 32 bit Windows.

The fact that you have 64 bit XP, as I see the situation does not mean that Silverlight will not install.
Indeed my opinion seems to be confirmed

Most of the reports that it would not work without windows crashing, generally appear to be attributable to another plug-in

I have not yet bought a copy of Win7 for myself,
so this could save me some cash, which is always
appreciated, and some other hiccups too. CooL!

I was going to load my stuff onto a Win7 system
to see if it was all compatible before buying it.
Instead I'll give reloading XP another try. ThankS!

If you really want to get in to everything Microsoft a bit better, grab yourself a Technet subscription. I have licenses for XP Pro x64 in mine so chances are if you buy a new one now it will still be there. (Yes I know you've already bought).

Perfect for the budding enthusiast who wants to try out heaps of different stuff. Build a new computer - great, how does XP Pro x64 run? How does Vista x64 run? How does Win 7 x64 run? Why not install a copy of server and see what that does? And Office licenses galore. Plus other stuff I don't even know what it is.

I learnt so much using my subscription.

Still working on it, lol. Call me a procrastination professional, jk. Anyhow... here's my update...

*GrUmBlE* (I know, any update that starts this way doesn't sound good, eh?)
I really got confused when my mobo said I needed a USB Floppy to install the AHCI driver in Windows XP.
I asked my techish housemate for help. His idea of helping me is usually to do it for me. *GrUmBlE*
He went ahead and installed it w/o AHCI (I'm not really sure what that means), but in IDE mode instead.
I realize that this means that if I want to run in AHCI mode, that I'll have to do a clean install...

On to the next issue:
I have everything arranged as I like it, I haven't installed anything on it but avast! and firefox...
Then, when poking around in control panel, I found that some drivers needed updating. I tried to do so.
All drivers updated fine except three. One would have, but I wasn't sure which listed driver to select.
The other two were unable to update. I wonder if this has something to do with the HDMI vs IDE modes?

The attachment shows a picture of the driver question marks as seen in device manager.
My mouse is pointing to the one I am in the midst of installing: PCI device.
The two wizard windows show the three driver options I have for my PCI device
(one w/ scroll@left, and other w/ scroll@right).
I tried googling which one to choose for about an hour before I gave up and came here.
I sure hope you Geeks can point me in the right direction? *Confuzzled* ~Nom

They are all different copies of the same driver. Look at the descriptions, version numbers, and file names. Only the directories are different.

For all it matters you could roll a die to choose. Select the driver of your choice and update. If I haven't made it clear, let me know.
