You said "i would like to remove or fix windows xp so i can install my newly aquired window windows 7".
If you want to install Windows 7 go ahead. Why bother messing with XP? You will need to do a Clean Install which means formatting the install partition as you cannot upgrade from XP to Win 7.
See here for instructions: How to Do a Clean Installation with Windows 7
Note that doing this will wipe out all data on the install partition so be sure you have anything you need backed up first.

Another thought on this is how old your computer is?
Will it be able to handle windows 7?

Ah, forgot about that, sorry. the Dimension 3000 in not listed in Dell's Windows 7 Compatible list, but then neither is my Precision 370 which runs Windows 7 Pro X64 perfectly. I did buy a new video card for it so I could have full Aero support and bumped the ram to 4GB.
Sounds like your processor and hard drive are okay, how much ram do you have?
