A good tablet for $200-$300 ?

My daughter would like a tablet to carry around to class at college instead of her laptop. She wants to be able to take notes ( type or stylus ). She "thinks" she wants a Kindle Fire. She already has a Kindle reader. Are there any good tablets around $200-$300 ? Any good note taking apps? How difficult are the keyboard apps to use on a tablet? What OS should I look for? I have posted this under the Smartphones/Tablets forum, but it doesnt look like it gets much traffic. I apologize for the double posting. Would love to get for Christmas if possible, but can exchange her bd/christmas gifts if necessary.
