A few weeks ago I noticed that it took forever for right-click menus to show up. I didn't think much of it because I use PicaView, but very recently I've started getting Dr. Watson Debugger errors and having some folders not open as well. I also cannot, for the life of me, get Windows Media Player to open.

I followed the "start here" directions from the forum and followed them well. It seems two seperate online scans picked up java.bytver.a, java.bytver.b, and java.bytver.g on my computer but couldn't delete the files. I did clear the java cache, but I couldn't figure out what to do beyond it. I've run through the "start here" directions twice and am still having all of the problems.

Please download Ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install Ewido security suite
• Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After that, I will need to see two different logs from HiJackThis. The first is the normal log like you posted here. To get the other one, follow these directions.

Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
Click "Open Uninstall Manager"
Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Post back with those logs and we can continue from there.

Alright, I found out sometime between my post and your reply that I had worm_sharebot.a, which I deleted manually with the help of a friend who's been through it. Other than that, I am still in need of help. So...

+++ Ewido Security Suite +++

I downloaded it and ran the update. However, the bottom bar (the status bar, if you will) said "ewidoctrl.exe not running but required!" I attempted to get it to run, but I couldn't figure it out. I've used the program before so I'm not sure what the deal is, but I do have Trend Micro PC-Cillin, so that could be the culprit.

I obviously can't post its log here, though, due to my inability to run it. Let me know what I should do about this, or if I should just skip this log.

+++ Kaspersky OnLine Scan +++

This scan, again, found worm_sharebot.a (so I guess I didn't delete it manually). It also found, as I suspected, java.bytever.a, java.bytever.b, and java.bytever.g. It couldn't clean or delete these files. I didn't see anything about saving a log or anything (perhaps I didn't look well enough?), but that is all that was found there.

I should mention that of those listed programs, I don't know what Dialer Helper or Digidesign Pro Tools® FREE are (I've tried to remove them from the add/remove programs list but one says I don't have an old enough version of Windows and one says I need to insert a disk to continue).

Also, I realize the Ebates thing is bad, but when I try to remove it from the add/remove list, it says the main file is missing and exits out of uninstaller.

I got this computer from a friend, so perhaps these things were just meant to be on here. I'm not sure. Thanks for the help, though!

Hi there preiseahn,

thanks for posting back. Regarding Ewido, i am not sure why it wont run either. can I suggest that while I am analysing your log and working out a fix, that you try this:-
Disconnect from the net
Disable the real time monitoring on your Trend application
Try running Ewido again.

If it still wont run, have a look and see whether you actually have the ewidoctrl.exe file on your PC, if you have, check in the file properties if there is anything there which has disabled the file.

I will start on your log now, but will wait till I see how you get on with Ewido before i post.

Alright, I got Ewido to work by disabling my firewall. However, it didn't find anything on the laptop. I should also mention that it didn't scan archives because they were disabled (because it is a trial application from download and I didn't purchase it). It did take forever though. It seems silly to post the empty report, but I shall for the sake of following directions.

Thanks for posting your log again. The log is actually fairly clean as it looks like your previous cleanups have removed most things. The downside to that however is that we may need to repeat the following process once or twice if new logs show more leftovers.

OK, lets get started


Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Alright. I rebooted in safe mode and then did so again (nothing peculiar happened in the safe mode reboot...if I was looking for anything).

The new HJT log doesn't show anything we fixed, so that is probably a good sign, but I checked a video file and my original problems (no right click ability on video files and no WMP) are still in the way. Maybe it isn't a spyware or virus type of problem?

As far as I can see, the log is clean, the only thing that i can think of is that Viewpoint which relates to the AOL media player is somehow interfering with WMP . Let me ask some of my colleagues about this and i will post back when I have done so.

I'm glad the log is clean...and I never downloaded Viewpoint. I'm not even sure why it is here.

But if you figure something out (or give up and can't get anything at all), let me know. I figured out a method to see video files that occasionally works, which is better than nothing. Either way, thanks for all the help up to this point!

I don't know if this means anything due to its lack of success getting through my firewall, but starting a few minutes ago I started getting this blocked warning:

"Detect MS04-011 LSASS EXPLOIT attack attempt".

Like I said, the firewall is just mentioning that it is being blocked, but it is popping up about every 30 seconds and suggesting I halt all internet traffic and do several different kinds of scans.

I'm not sure if that could be part of this particular problem or not, but I thought it wise to mention...


Oh! The method I use: I open the folder without hovering over any file or clicking any file under any circumstance. And then I use the arrow keys on the keyboard to navigate to any video file and then I use the keyboard to access the file menu. I have PicaView, which allows you to view previews of files in smaller sizes if you right click on them. So when I open the file menu (or rather, if I can get it to open without error) I can see the little video in the box. Pretty frustrating.

Ok, I think this is the rrot of the problem

please do the following

disconnct from the net, clear out your java cache again,
[*]Now you have to clean out your temporary files:

• Start | Run | type cleanmgr | OK
• Let it scan your system for files to remove.
• Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
• Click "OK" to remove them.
• Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion.

[*]Restart your computer normally to return to normal mode.

Let me have a think about this. Quick question, are all your windows XP patches up to date?

Alright, I ran disk cleanup. There were very few temporary files to delete, but the Recycle Bin definitely needed the cleanup.

I then followed the thread given. And...

...movies files work wonderfully. I am elated. Windows Media Player is still being strange, but I think if I download it again, it will help. Also, restarting might be a good idea.

Congratulations Preiseahn, your log is clean

Now that it is clean, lets keep it that way.

You must get all the patches installed for your copy of XP, although you have SP2 on, there are a lot of vital security patches that you must install to stay safe.The firewall report you recieved shows that an attack was being made on one of the unpatched holes in your system. You can get the patches you need installed automatically, do this from the Security Centre, in Control Panel. Please let this be the very next thing that you do.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
