I am hoping that somebody here may be able to help me out....I seem to have picked up some type of virus effecting Microsoft Security essentials, and my microsoft security center. I am running windows XP. Problems began a few days ago when I got red shield that looked like the microsoft security center warning on the lower right of my screen. Warning told me I was unprotected, that there was no anti-virus installed on my system. I am running Microsoft security essentials so I knew this wasn't true. When I clicked on the shield it opened up what looked like the microsoft security center (now I am not so sure.) From there, I clicked on "reccomendations" which steared me to an antivirus program website. I did not download anything as it looked off to me. I immediately updated and scanned using malwarebytes and MSE, nothing came up, so I didn't think much of it. However, internet speed began to slow daily and it seemed like pages would load, but never 'finished'. I was also getting a dell messege popping up telling me there was a problem with a font installed on my computer. The pop up asked to repair, so I clicked yes, it then said "repair failed" this came up a few times after I noticed the red shield, but not before. Not sure if that is at all related. I use firefox mainly, and the status bar never stopped being a green circle.
In an effort to clear up what ever I had, I ran malwarebytes in safe mode as well as MSE. In safe mode I could not turn on "real time protection", as i got error 0x8000705b4. I tried to update MSE, but it seemed to stall. (today I can not update MSE definitions, i get error code 0x8007043c.) I have also had issues trying to boot into safe mode, pressing "f8" does not work. the only way I was able to do it was to cut the power as windows was loading, and I would then get the error msg asking me if I wanted to boot in safe mode when I re-started. (on my dell laptop, it say press f2 for something and f12 for options, but i am not sure how to get to safe mode from those?)
I have run : 1) Malwarebytes Scan
2) Microsoft Security Essentials Scan
3)Kaspersky virus removal tool (from flash drive)
4)Tdsskiller (trying anything at this point)
5) Microsoft security scan
All came up blank. I am at my wit's end, I know just enough about computers to get myself into trouble, and don't want to get in even further over my head. I would be eternally grateful if someone could point me in the right direction/guide me through this
I also ran spybot, when I ran that I initially got a missing .dll file error, but it ran. The same thing happened when I downloaded and ran OTL. Here is the log from OTL, keeping in mind that it originally told me there was a .dll file missing :
