Noticed my browser started redirecting me to site different from my home page. Further investigation has uncovered both my CD drives are not being read. Attempted to start Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware but get the following message:

C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware/mbam.exe
Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Don't have any other log ins other than Administrator.

Tried to move mbam.exe to a different directory, but am told:

Cannot copy mbam: Access is denied.
Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Tried to run OTL.exe on the desktop, but am given the message about not having proper permission.

Other shortcuts on the desktop appear to work (Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional, AutoCAD, MS Word, etc).

Suggestions?

could you please try running DDS instead of OTL:

Please run a scan with DDS:

• Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  DDS.scr
  DDS.pif
  
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
• A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
• Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
• Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:

• Main Mirror
  This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
• Zipped Mirror
  This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.

• Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
• Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
• Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
• Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.
  
  
  
• GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
• If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
• Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.

Downloaded gmer to my desktop and tried to run it. Went thru the instructions and clicked "Scan". Ran for a while and then quit/closed and I was at my desktop again. Tried to delete the downloaded .exe from the desktop and was told "Acess is Denied - Make sure the drive is not full or write protected."

Tried to Run gmer, instead of Save, and same thing. Ran for a little bit and then quit/closed.

Only had 3 strings of information show up before closing. One that caught my attention that I wrote down was the following:

" ? C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\AFS2k.sys Suspicious PE (something).

• Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Making progress.

Reviewed the Combo Fix Log and saw the number of files infected and fixed. Double checked and I do indeed have my CD Rom Drives back. Yeah!

Tried to run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and still get the following dialog box come up:

happy to hear that. You had a number of files missing.. probably deleted by an overzealous anti virus program in the attempt to clean off the infection (and half your OS with that. )

We need to scan the system with this special tool.

• Please download Junction.zip and save it.
• Unzip it and put junction.exe in the Windows directory (C:\Windows).
• Go to Start => Run... => Copy and paste the following command in the run box and click OK:
  

  cmd /c junction -s c:\ >log.txt&log.txt& del log.txt

  A command window opens starting to scan the system. Wait until a log file opens. Copy and paste or attach the content of it.

Did a Right-Click on the "Program Files" folder and see, for whatever reason, it was set as "Read-Only". Deselected that and included sub-folders w/ that to see if that corrects the issue on running Malwarebytes. Will begin the Junction download and run it.

Since I was getting Access Denied on Malwarebytes, it wasn't running, and some time has passed since I last downloaded it...I tried to uninstall it and was successful. Will try to download it now and see if it will run.
