Hello, thanks very much for supplying this help, even the hope it gives is worth loads. ok, i am running a Toshiba laptop (says Satellite and Harman/kardon on the keypad area too) using windows vista home basic. i believe i left the machine on but in sleep mode and was caught by snow in the mountains and could not return home for three days. when i start to use the machine again it is painfully slow and is not connected to the internet (use wifi) and reports 'Connection status: unknown The dependency service or group failed to start.' so i tried to find a network to connect to and was given 'Windows cannot find any networks.' i go to diagnose whz windows cannot find any networks and a window (windows network diagnostics) appears saying 'Network Diagnostics cannot run because the diagnostics Policy service is not running'. i go into Services and note that Diagnostics Policy Service is still set to 'startup type Automatic' but it is not running so I click on/highlight it and then click on the Start Service green arrow at the top of the window. the Service control window opens saying that it is attempting to start the following service on the local computer etc, at this point i am given the error message; Windows could not start the Diagnostic Policy Service on local computer Error 5: Access is denied.

having looked around i found this site and after reading and searching it appeared that i needed to make a seperate log/entry. i downloade the OTL scan tool and the results are posted below as well as attached in a Notepad doc. please note that i am using another computer to communicate with you. many thanks for looking at this, i would be fascinated to know what you look for in a case of this nature and i believe i will indeed sign up for your malware fighting/cleaning course - once my machine is back up and running, thanks again,

The Charlatan.

Hi,

please run a scan with gmer next:
Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and re-enable all active protection when done.
-- If you encounter any problems, try running GMER in Safe Mode.
