vista won't install after a new hard drive install

I have a dell 1545 laptop and I just had a new hard drive installed and now I can't get windows vista to install, I have the CD but it stops before the installation is complete

Did you format and partition the HDD before attempting to install Vista and what type of Vista disk do you have, a full retail or OEM type?
