Computer seems to be running fine. I do think, however, that I have some hardware issues. It sometimes crashes on rebooting... :-(

How frequently do you have the crashes?

Is there an error code on the crash?

What makes you think it is hardware vs. software?

What is the make and model number of your computer?

Step 1.

Who Crashed BSOD analysis

  • Please download WhoCrashed 3.02 from here to your Desktop.
  • Install it and run it.
  • Click on Analyze button.
  • Select all (CTRL+A) and then copy (CTRL+C).
  • Paste (CTRL+V) contents of clipboard in your next reply.

Step 2.

Please download VEW and save it to your Desktop:

Setting up the program
Right-click VEW.exe and select Run as Administrator then under Select log to query, select:

  • Application
  • System

Under Select type to list, select:

  • Critical (Vista only)
  • Error
  • Click the radio button for Number of events
  • Type 20 in the 1 to 20 box
  • Then click the Run button.
  • Notepad will open with the output log.

Load the log
  • Save the log to your desktop
  • On your reply click Choose File
  • Click the upload button

Step 3.

Post both logs

The computer does not reboot by itself. However, I've had some episodes where I could not turn it on. When I tried, one of the fans (do not know which) started running very loudly and the computer would just not boot. We opened it, got rid of all the dust, my son tried interchanging the memory cards and it seemed to fix the problem for a while. However, with all the rebooting I've been doing following these instructions, on one occasion, I just got the "acer" screen at the very beginning of reboot and it froze there. So I turned it off and when I tried turning it back on, I encountered the same problem with the fan and the computer not booting. I turned it off and when I turned it back on, it was OK.

That's why I believe it's hardware rather than software.

Here's the WhoCrashed analysis.

I'll download and run VEW now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Welcome to WhoCrashed (HOME EDITION) v 3.03
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This program checks for drivers which have been crashing your computer. If your computer has displayed a blue screen of death, suddenly rebooted or shut down then this program will help you find the root cause and possibly a solution.

Whenever a computer suddenly reboots without displaying any notice or blue screen of death, the first thing that is often thought about is a hardware failure. In reality, on Windows most crashes are caused by malfunctioning device drivers and kernel modules. In case of a kernel error, many computers do not show a blue screen unless they are configured for this. Instead these systems suddenly reboot without any notice.

This program will analyze your crash dumps with the single click of a button. It will tell you what drivers are likely to be responsible for crashing your computer. If will report a conclusion which offers suggestions on how to proceed in any situation while the analysis report will display internet links which will help you further troubleshoot any detected problems.

Crash Dump Analysis

Crash dump directory: C:\Windows\Minidump

Crash dumps are enabled on your computer.

No valid crash dumps have been found on your computer

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crash dumps are enabled but no valid crash dumps have been found. It may be that there are problems which prevent crash dumps from being written out. Check out the following article for possible causes: If crash dumps are not written out.

In case your computer does experience sudden reboots it is likely these are caused by malfunctioning hardware, power failure or a thermal issue. To troubleshoot a thermal issue, check the temperature using your BIOS setup program, check for dust in CPU and motherboard fans and if your computer is portable make sure it's located on a hard surface. Otherwise it's suggested you contact the support department of the manufacturer of your system or test your system with a memory test utility for further investigation.

Check out the following articles for more information: Troubleshooting sudden resets and shut downs.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is actually responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

Potential hardware issues and Operating system issues are in the list.

Have you accepted and installed all Microsoft critical and important updates?

There were none in the list because the automatic update function was already enabled. There were optional updates which I installed, including IE 9. Two of the optional updates failed to install (nvidia nforce networking controller and ATI Radeon HD 3400 Series).

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to start a topic here concerning your boot issues. Our colleagues are experts in this area and will take excellent care of you!

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

The following steps will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programs we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

SPRING CLEAN

To manually create a new Restore Point
  • Go to Control Panel and select System
  • Select System
  • On the left select System Protection and accept the warning if you get one
  • Select System Protection Tab
  • Select Create at the bottom
  • Type in a name i.e. Clean
  • Select Create

Now we can purge the infected ones
  • GoStart > All programs > Accessories > system tools
  • Right click Disc cleanup and select run as administrator
  • Select Your main drive and accept the warning if you get one
  • For a few moments the system will make some calculations
  • Select the More Options tab
  • In the System Restore and Shadow Backups select Clean up
  • Select Delete on the pop up
  • Select OK
  • Select Delete

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programs:
