Is it worth trying to roll this back to the first back up? Or does this bug attach itself somewhere that it just doesn't matter which back up i go to?

Nope, no need as it is no longer active you can delete it from disc management within windows

1. Open Computer Management (Local) (as before)

2. In the console tree, click Disk Management.

3. Right-click the partition, and then click Delete Partition.

Let me know how that goes and any remaining problems :)

done! That sucker is gone.

Now, I ran TDSSKiller and it shows 22 threats. Basically, everything we skipped over in my previous log minus the guy we deleted. Is this ok?

Eset is running now and has passed the point where we usually find our Trojan.

Disk Management shows no partition for our Trojan after reboot.

My Remaining Steps:
1. Answer on TDSSKiller
2. Finish Eset Scan
3. Login as DeskManager - do i need to be cautious here for any reason? Or should our clean up efforts applied to all users?
4. If all looks good I think this can be put to bed!

Thanks so much for your help on this. It was a tough little bugger.

The skipped files are not a problem as they are legitimate

To confirm that the tombstone has been erected on this blighter, when you log in as desktop manager could you run an OTL scan from there and at the top put a tick in scan all users. No requirement for a script as a standard scan will suffice

Is the computer behaving itself now ?

OK lets now remove the rubbish that I have put on your system

Now you have one working computer lets see if we can resolve the other problems .. For the one that does not appear to work we will use a Linux based system to see if we can recover/repair anything... I will put that in the next post

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :Commands
    [resethosts]
    [emptytemp]
    [CLEARALLRESTOREPOINTS]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Remove ComboFix
  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    then click OK

    Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Posted Image Your Java is out of date.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application.

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Posted Image Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?Keep safe

OK we will work outside of windows on your husbands laptop
Please print these instruction out so that you know what you are doing

  • Download OTLPENet.exe to your desktop
  • Download this scan.txt to a USB drive
  • Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  • Double click OTLPENet.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :)
  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start
  • Drag and drop this attached scan.txt into the Custom scans and fixes box, or double click the scan box
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system
  • Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
  • Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
  • You can backup any files that you wish from this OS
  • Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.

I ran OTL with the script, but it has been running for an hour and the machine is not responding. There are no icons or windows on the desktop, but the mouse still moves around. Should i kill it and force reboot?

Thank you for the instructions for my husbands laptop. I have a couple of questions before I start, however. His drive won't boot into windows, so should i attach his drive to a computer that does boot? Or, should i do steps 1 - 4 on a different computer, and then boot from CD on my husbands?

Note his drive does run through the diagnostic test through bios. I can see the drive when attached to another computer, but windows says it is unformatted. When I check the drive through a disk utility it says it has a bad filesystem.

It looks like malwarebytes may be interfering? I disabled malwarebytes and tried to run it again. Its been "Killing Processes..." for about 15 minutes.

Yep that is an error with Malwarebytes it does not like being stopped so rather than let OTL proceed it holds it

Reboot the computer and then proceed to the combofix uninstall etc...

Yes create the OTLPE disc on a separate computer and then use it to boot the dead one
