Background: Over the weekend, I installed MS Office 2010 on my home computer through an offer made by Microsoft to employees at my work place (the offer was for each employee to install one copy of Office 2010, for a very low price, on that employee's home computer). My system, purchased in 2003, had been running MS Office 2003 without a problem though the computer was admittedly slow. When I installed Office 2010, there was a glitch in the download so I had to restart the download and, because it was late, I let it run all night, with my Norton protection turned off (the installation instructions stated something to the effect that all firewalls and/or virus protectors had to be disabled during installation). The next day I checked for Microsoft updates and was told by the scan to install some type of upgrade or patch for Office 2007, which I did. I also upgraded Adobe Reader and upgraded and ran Spybot - Search & Destroy. I may have even run a Norton scan (I have Norton Internet Security version 19.2.0.10). I did all of this with the appropriate reboots after the upgrades. I then played around a bit in Outlook to get the calendar, contacts, and tasks to display the way I like them. At some point I began working in Word 2010 to finish drafting a Word 2007 document I had emailed myself. All of this (except for the glitch in download) seemed to go without a problem.

Issue 1: At some point, I tried to sync my Treo 650 with my computer in order to update my Outlook calendar, contacts, and tasks on my Treo and computer. The sync failed because a complete connection between the Treo and computer wasn't made. I didn't try again thinking I need to download an update to my syncing software. In the process of researching a possible update, I came across the recommendation to first backup my computer's Outlook data. I began looking for the specified files and couldn't find them.

Issue 2: About two days ago, I attempted to do a "labels" mail merge on Office 2010. The merge failed to work both when I started it in Outlook and when I started in in Word. It seemed that the contacts information was never transferred in the merge because I ended up with a Word document showing a complete page of the appropriately sized labels, each with the words "new record" but no actual contacts data (no names or addresses). I tried to tap into on-line help for Outlook but Outlook/the system wouldn't connect to on-line help though my internet connection was on and working. After trying the merge in several different ways, I began to think that the problem for both Issue 1 and Issue 2 was that my Outlook data wasn't where it was supposed to be (during one type of mail merge approach, I got a message to the effect that the Outlook Contacts couldn't be found). Looking further for my Outlook data, I discovered it wasn't in any of the places it should have been, based on the results of my self-help trouble shooting Google findings. After doing a system search, I did find what may be the bulk of the Outlook data information.

Issue 3: In the course of trying to find out why Issues 1 and 2 were occurring, I opened my Start Menu to run a system search and discovered all but two of the icons typically on the right side of the menu had disappeared. Upon opening the Start Menu option in the control panel, I discovered all of those icons had been disabled. I clicked the place to re-enable them and they all reappeared in the actual Start Menu.

Issue 4: Also in the course of trying to find my Outlook information, I opened my Recycle Bin, thinking it might have been discarded. Although I have never examined my recycle bin, I noted that the box "discard protected files in 7 days" was checked, though the bin contained numerous items, possibly including protected files, much older than 7 days. I turned off the "discard in 7 days" option.

What I've done to try to resolve these problems: I contacted Microsoft support this morning and spoke with a tech, who also remoted into my computer. Because we were thinking that MS Office 2010 might have installed improperly, he opened "Add Remove Programs" to repair the program. "Add Remove Programs" opened but wouldn't populate (though it had populated for me the night before). He told me to run and do the fixes from a Norton Quick Scan and then to repair Office 2010 through "Add Remove Programs". I did a Quick Scan; it ran much more quickly that the tech said it would (in perhaps 15-20 minutes instead of 1 to 1.5 hours) and found nothing. I saw the note under the scan results saying click here if you still think there are risks. I clicked there and was directed to download and run "NPE.exe". I did so; that scan also found nothing. I then "repaired" Office 2010, tried mail merge, and found it still wouldn't work and had the same problems as before.

My questions are as follows:
Question 1: What can I do to get my Treo 650 to sync with Outlook 2010?
Question 2: How can I get mail merge to work within Office 2010? - and how can I get Outlook 2010 to tap into on-line help?
Question 3: What caused my start menu icons to disappear and how can I prevent it from happening again?
Question 4: Assuming that my recycling bin shouldn't have been set to delete protected files after 7 days, what caused that and how can I prevent that from happening again?

Below are the results of my OTL execution. There are two Notepad results files, the first is OTL.Txt - Notepad; the second is Extras.Txt - Notepad:

Hi Gammo,

THank you for responding. I've just posted my topic in the location you suggested - and am also working with Microsoft on the side (latest suggestion - reinstall all of MS Office 2010). If this ends up being a misinstall of Office 2010 and not malware, I'm happy to send something to support your work. I'm still trying to figure things out for now, though... Just curious - were you able to tell from the Notepad results that there was no malware at work?

Your OTL log shows only legitimate files and settings, and no malware. Also your problems just don't sound like malware symptoms.

Good luck in your new topic.
