I have deleted your last reply as the copy and paste was the WHOLE of the applications log from event viewer and due to it only being the listing of the headings was of no use.
Please just send the chkdsk log.

Here is HOW
Start
Control Panel
Administrative tools
Event Viewer
On left pane click application.
On main window click the source colum heading
scroll to winlogon - or click source again and it will then put winlogon at the top of the list
Open the winlogon entry
Verifiy it is the chkdsk results
Copy and paste those results please as you did previously.

Well, what is there to say.
I am sure you have seen it for yourself
A sector is 512bytes for this purpose
You have 20Kb in bad sectors.
I am sure you know but a Kb is 1000 bytes

So does that mean we have done as much as we can with this machine? Are the bad sectors related to the missing programs in the add/remove folder? Should I just uninstall and reinstall the missing programs to get them added in this folder?

It means that you and I are wasting our time, with any further attempts to solve that one small problem of the programs, as the disk is failing.
It may last sometime, it may go any day.
As another sector becomes bad, you are likely to suffer problems of error messages etc.

When chkdsk /r is implemented that includes a check for and attempted recovery of data from bad sectors. The data is rewitten to good sectors and the sector marked bad to prevent data being written to it in future.

If a bad sector developed in the sector of the drive that carries the MFT the drive simply will not work. - Master File Table
If it developed in the MBR - Master Boot record - then windows will not load.

If you wish to show the friend/customer definite proof apart from the chkdsk results, find the make of drive on Device Manager, open the entry disk drives and you should see some inidcation.
Go to the manufacturers site and run their utility from dos as a bootable cd or floppy if the computer has a floppy drive.
