I currently have a post in the vista fix forum and have a feeling my problem is going downhill. On top of that I really am looking into upgrading my home computer.

Currently I am looking for something with the following:

At least 8 gb of ram
High quality Vid Card
High quality Motherboard ans CPU

As far as the rest I am open for ideas. What I am looking at is having a home computer that in the future I may be able to contract what I do for a living; Machining toolpaths using Catia V5 (software made by Dassault Systemes which also makes Solidworks and modeling programs such as that) and a quality program called Vericut. I also wouldn't mind being able to create blue ray DVDs.

I have looked into New Egg and have noticed that the gaming towers have a similar layout to what I need. There is also a newer website I haven't heard of that I found through NewEgg that is called CPU solutions. Has anyone had any good experience with this website? I know they are able to build you PC for you, but I really don't know what to put into the tower I make that will be within me budget.

Any ideas/thoughts would be great.

Thanks

Hi jaxin326, Posted Image,

Working out the system requirements may take a fair bit of research. This is what I have so far, http://a3.media.3ds....4-bit.html#BOXX
followed a couple of the links, can get some information but nothing about the HDDs and how they are configured.

Looking at what is there, you may get some prices of parts, get a price for an already configured system.

Let us know then what your budget would be.

Understand that a good gaming computer does NOT make a good CAD/CAE computer. You need a "workstation" computer - as a minimum, a "workstation" graphics card and lots of RAM. And as can be seen here, workstation graphics cards can be quite pricey.

And note a new computer needs a new operating system license too.

I would figure that Dassault usually thinks the most top end computers would be best, but around $2000 is not in the price range. It seems that a lot of those configurations have the top end windows 7 editions (i truthfully don't believe that is needed). My current computer that seems to be going downhill I built about 5 years back and it has the current configuration (at least what i can remember since i can't get on my computer right now):

Windows vista Basic
2 GB of RAM
320GB hard drive
2.2-2.4 GHz i3 (i think it's intel 3) processor
NVidia 320 MB vid card

This is kind of based on what I can last remember, but it is pretty close to this configuration.

The thing is I tried Catia on this computer and it actually works just fine with small modelling projects (modeled my Landscape and Shed that I built in it). Looking at the 'Dassault certified systems' I see they are all the top of the line.

All I would like to know is what type of Vid cards are out there that are high quality for a good price; also, wanted to see what type of motherboard and CPU work together and work well together. Lastly, I would like to know what type of ram works well with certain motherboards that I can get a minimum of 8gb of ram on the computer. If windows 7 is the future and not the future as it was for vista, what windows 7 would be the best suitable for software like Catia/Vericut and other misc. programs.

Thank you very much for any other ideas out there

Thanks

Please have a look at this site. For the work you are going to perform, for the best performance the tier 2 is what would be required.

Unless you require the highest quality photo results, I would be looking towards the top GPUs, IE. GTX 560 ti.

A motherboard has to be select first and then compatible CPU and RAM. Then other components and last the PSU.

We do not have to select what is on the list, just will give you an idea of what is required.

Wow, thanks that should help out a lot. I actually think I can talk the ole wife to change my budget to upwards of 1200 if need be. Hopefully with that amount I can come up with something.

Thanks again

BTW, I've heard of the sabertooth motherboard and that it is one of the top of the line models. Is this true? I know it works well with i7 (or it says it does), but curious if anyone looking at this has one in their tower now?

combined a few things onto my new egg account, if you could see what I have selected and see if there's a place where I could save any money. I should be able to afford close to this amount, but wouldn't mind saving money where possible?

Thanks

GPU. I suggest you change to the one below, slightly slower for games but will give the same quality output for your work, same CUDA cores. A little quieter, a little cooler. cheaper.
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814121446

Mobo. Consider using a Z68 chip-set platform, this will give you full access to all the CPU graphics features. They are disable when the CPU is installed on a P67 chip-set platform.

SSD. Good for booting the system but unless it is a lot larger, I thin a waist of money Without having a second HDD for storage, with your programs, working with large files, source files, finished projects, you will very quidkly run out of space. I suggest the below 500GB HDD for your OS drive and when prices fall later this year, get a 1TB HDD for Data storage, source files, finished projects and back ups.

wow, thanks. Yea I wasn't sure on the SSD, have just heard from co-workers that it's the way to go...does seem a bit small when some of the projects I work on get over 2 GB easy.

going by what iammykyl said, the config is as shown:

A G2G How to Build your own computer,

One more, http://www.diy-gamin...ild-a-Computer/

Tips.

Before working on the computer, always unplug from the wall socket and take anti static measure.
Check and check again that the stand-offs inside the case, screwed to the Mobo mounting plate, match the pattern and number of screw holes in the Motherboard, No extra ones. A short under the Mobo is the biggest cause of a rig not powering up.

Download your user manual, it could be more up to date than the printed one inside the box.
I recommend to update the video drivers only from the GPU manufacturers website, they are less likely to be buggy.

Any questions of help? we are here.

Please keep us informed of how things go as it helps everyone on the forum.

Well finally put the computer together last night, here's what I ended up putting into it:

Posted Image

Not sure how to show what the computer's performance is other than the microsoft index system. It rates at a 7.7 out of 7.9 . The 7.7 came from my cpu/memory operations per second/desktop performance for windows aero, all others were at 7.8.

Great news, I hope you are happy with the build?
That score is pretty good. You can have 2 builds with identical specs but different branded components and get different scores.
Just for interest. http://news.softpedi...ne-153089.shtml

You could run PCMark benchmarks if you are interested. http://www.pcmark.co...mark7/download/

AS it is not good practise to defrag an SSD, make sure it is turned off for the SSD drive.
