This time I came back from dinner and the system was hanging and unresponsive. I hit reset and restarted.

but if you read down a bit you would see this...
STOP code
The error code that identifies the error that stopped the system kernel from continuing to run. It is the first set of hexadecimal values displayed on the blue screen. At a minimum, frontline Admins should be required to note this code, and the four other codes displayed in parenthesis, and any drivers identified on the screen. Often, this is all you really need!

its possible but could also be a sleep or hibernate problem plus a driver for the iphone or something else...
try going to add remove programs and uninstall any iphone drivers

also in the power settings section turn off hibernate and sleep...reboot and see how things go...

Done and done. I set the screen saver to go on after 20 minutes and to show photos. Is that ok or should I turn that off too?

I think the problem with the iPhone was related to me having to reset the iPhone. For some reason resetting the phone made the system hang. I had to reset it on my laptop and then it worked fine. Who knows, though, right?

It has been much more stable. I crashed once a couple of days ago when my daughter was using it, but I think it was unrelated to my other BOSDs. When I went to the Event list there was nothing for that crash.

Next move? Should I re-install iTunes and see if that causes any problems?

ps: it just occured to me that my daughter was logged in under her own name/account. Should I log in as her to see if the event was recorded?

yep...

only install itunes...leave hibernate and standby disabled for at least a week...
no crashes...
try enabling only one of them...no crashes after a week turn on the other...

Hi again,
Re-installed iTunes 5 days ago. I left the computer running during the game today and came back 5 hours later to a hard hang. iTunes was running, as well as outlook. At least they were running when I left the computer. When I came back it was totally unresponsive and I had to reset to restart.

I noticed several messages from itunes saying it could not sync (via wifi) with my iphone.

Event log lists it as the same event 41.

0x80 = unknown hardware failure
0x78 = PHASE0_EXCEPTION - related to HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer)
0x26 = CD file system error
0x244 = unknown
0x0 = unknown

1 dump listed udfs.sys as the probable cause; other listed ntoskrnl.exe, which is the Windows Kernel.

Both are Microsoft OS drivers and are listed as a default.

Varying bugchecks point to unknown hardware failure as the likely cause.

Hi jcgriff2,

I built the system myself about a month ago. I noticed random restarts about once a day during the first or second day. Everything was new except my hard drive, which is a partitioned 1tb. I installed Win7 on it right away, directly over XP.

Here is the hardware I built it with:
CPU:Ci7 2600k
MB: Asus p8/z68-v/Gen3
PSU: OCZTech 750w
Case: Antec 300
GPU: Zotac GTX 560 TI
Ram: Patriot 8 gb 1600 (2 sticks of 4)
Samsung 22x sata DVDRW

The motherboard looks a little warm according to speccy, but when I run the utility that came with the mb, it puts the MB temp at 28C (the same as the cpu).

I ran memtest86+ for happyrock. The output is below. Should I run it again? Should I run one stick at a time?



I tried running memtest g80 and it ran 50 iterations but the window then disappeared. Can I get that data somewhere?

I'll run the other diagnostics and report back.

Is Windows 7 a full retail version or OEM builders version?
Was it an upgrade license?
Any doubt that the W7 installation DVD is good, undamaged?

Can you back up files so the entire HDD can be wiped (low-level DOS format) if necessary?

get screenshots of both temps and voltage...
are you OCing anything...if so...take everything back to default and reboot..

Windows 7 is an OEM version, not an upgrade.
The disk seemed OK to me. I bought it sealed and it didn't look damaged or anything.
All my data is backed up, so I can do a clean wipe if necessary. It would be a bummer, but if that is what it takes...

It will probably take me a day or two to run all those diagnostics, as I have some work to do, but I'll let you know what the results are as soon as I run them.
