No joy, removed all nokia apps but still doing the same.

Sorry to be a pain.

I've just put static ip back in again and when you go into Network and Sharing Centre, it's sitting as private network but it's checking it every few minutes. Also in manage wireless networks my network is showing as System Profile under networks you can view and modify, and not its SSID name.

I am also getting a bt broadband help popup but when I click fix it is just displaying a screen with this page cannot be displayed.
Bt broadband is my friends internet provider.

I wonder if there is a corruption within the BT programme - I know when I used them some years ago I had to install some propriety programmes. Do you still have the BT install disc to try and restore it ?

Hi Essexboy,

I would have to check if they still have disc, I have since accessed the bt help but this does not resolve the issue. BT help updated the app Motive Control Host but still could not connect wirelessly. When I connected to the network with my cable, it shows as a private network but could not assiign an ip and connect to the net

My gut instinct is it's something to do with Windows vista as an O/S, I had a look at a few other forums none quite match mine, what I have seen is that in vesta the default ip on assigning to a public network is 0000.0000.0000.0000. I do not know the relevance to this but have found a few people with problems and connecting to a public network appears to be a common denominator.

Although when connected via cable the LAN shows as Private Network but will still not assign ip automaticaly.

Very confused.

There are some new analysis tools I am playing with at the moment

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Hi Essexboy,

Here's a wee update before I post the log.

So far using the ethernet cable the network shows as private and checking through cmd and ipconfig shows a ip of 192.168.1.4. It does not connect to the net and shows only local access when mouse hovered over the icon.

Using wireless the network shows as public does not show the network ssid but shows as system profile or unidentified network it shows the address as the apipa 169 address and again only has limited access.

I ran this scan with the ethernet cable disconnected and the wireless set to automatic ip.

Hi Essexboy

I think the answer to this is no. I have my laptop connected to my router for internet access. I am trying to connect my friends daughters laptop to the internet via my router also. my isp is talktalk and hers is bt.

Could it just be her bt software preventing the connection and forcing the static ip. I know bt broadband can be pretty intrusive in your system?
Hope that helps

Error: (01/28/2012 06:20:38 PM) (Source: Tcpip) (User: )
Description: The system detected an address conflict for IP address 192.168.1.1 with the system
having network hardware address 4C-ED-DE-2E-B8-EE. Network operations on this system may
be disrupted as a result.

This is why I thought it may be networked..

Have you tried to create a new connection to the router

Hi Essexboy,

That i think was just me last night stupidly giving my friends daughters laptop the same static ip as my routers default gateway.

No i haven't i was trying to connect by just connecting to the router through the ssid and newtwork security key.
Don't know if this is relevant but I just tryed to manually flush dns in cmd with command ipconfig/flushdns.
The reply was, The requested operation requires elevation?

scottb.

Aye with Vista/7 you need to run an elevated command prompt to run those commands

Go...Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right click the command prompt and select run as administrator

Have you tried to use windows to troubleshoot the problem ?

Right click the network icon and select troubleshoot

Dependant on the result of that I may need to drag in a network tech :)

Hi Essexboy,

No joy again Flushed dns, tried diagnose and repair after right clicking icon. I got a message windows found a problem that cannot be repaired automatically.

If the laptop is clean as far as infection I would be grateful if you could ask a network tech to have a look at it my heads scrambled with it.

I take it nothing was wrong in the log posted?

OK first reply from Ron - I forgot the McAfee is a nightmare with firewall stuff

He's got McAfee on the thing. Perhaps its firewall is hosed and not allowing DHCP thru. I would uninstall it

Download and Save the free Avast installer.
http://www.avast.com...ivirus-download

Download the McAfee Removal tool
http://download.mcaf...atches/MCPR.exe

(If you think you might want to reinstall McAfee later then follow the instructions here to save your license info:
http://service.mcafe...spx?id=TS100507 )

Uninstall McAfee, run the McAfee uninstall tool, reboot.
Install Avast.

If that doesn't work then have him run

sc query > \junk.txt

from an elevated command prompt and attach \junk.txt
