Hi all,

I've been grappling with Aurora for over a week now and I'm turning to this forum for help. I've noticed others with the same problem here and I was ready to just follow another posters' resolution when it occured that my system will be different. So if any of you bright intelligent folks here would mind helping, I would be grateful. So, I already have HijackThis, Nailfix, CCleaer, Microsoft Spyware, Ad-Aware Se and AVG av. HijackThis log to follow. Anything else before we start?

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix will require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

A nice collection of nasties you have there, let’s see what we can do.

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
Nail Fix

Go to Start>Run and type Services.msc then hit OK
Scroll down and find this service:

System Startup Service (SvcProc)

When you find it, double-click on it. In the next window that opens, click the Stop button, then click on Properties and under the General Tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled. Now hit Apply and then OK.

Run HiJackThis. Click on None of the above, just start the program. Now, click on the Config button (bottom right), then click on Misc Tools, then click on Delete an NT Service a window will pop up. Enter this item into that field (copy and paste):

SvcProc

Click OK.

It should pull up information about the service, when it asks if you want to reboot now click YES

Please open the trial version of Ewido Security Suite, and update the definitions to the latest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please install Nailfix, unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly, this is normal.

Install Ewido Security Suite (it is a 14-day trial version of the programme).

• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The programme will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The programme will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Make sure the following boxes are checked before scanning:
  • Binder
  • Crypter
  • Archives
• Click on Start Scan
• Let the programme scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop and include it in your reply.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Hi Phil, thanks for assisting me. Just a question before we proceed. I allowed Weatherbug to be installed on my system, and I see you marked it as something I should delete. Is this suspected spyware, or is there something else I don't know about it? If so, I have no problem removing it, I just wanted to check first. Also, isn't Viewpoint also connected to AOL Instant Messenger? Again, I'll delete it immediately if it's a risk. Just checking first. I'll proceed once with the rest of your instructions once I hear from you again.

You have touched upon a great subject, spyware. Viewpoint and Weatherbug are definitely spies in that they gather information and report back to their sponsors. However, neither are considered malicious.

My role in computing is one of a spyware fighter, as I believe that anyone wishing to collect information from you, should tell you in big bold hard-to-miss letters, and not just sneak in and do it.

Read my intro; I am fallible and if you don't want to delete them; don't.

Nearly there now!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

Hi Phil,

Things are looking better now. Although when I rebooted into Safe Mode to add/remove ABI Network it opened an Explorer window with an explanation that I have chosen to uninstall this SPYWARE (my word) and that I can obtain their newer snooping software disguised as an uninstall untility. I closed that window and rebooted normally, but it's still located in my Add/Remove window - it didn't go away - yet. Here's a fresh HJT log though.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

MOST IMPORTANT: You should update Windows and Internet Explorer to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the internet.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated.

Since you have the horrible feeling about rebooting, I'll leave this thread open for a few days longer, just in case. BTW I was under the impression that the website offering uninstallation of ABI was legitimate. I'd better check it.

Thanks so much for helping out. I rebooted and ran a scan with Microsoft Spyware program, and nothing came up except for several spyware files stuck in my C:\system volume information\_restore files dating back a couple of weeks. It detected:

Trojan.startup.Oe3df3 (Trojan) - several examples of this one
Transponder.abetterinternet.aurora - 2 instances
Transponder.abetterinternet.drpmon - 1 instance
Begin2search (Browser plug in) - 2 instances

And this one was deteceted outside any system restore files:

Now, before I go and try to remove those with Microsoft Spyware, will that act reinstall those programs? Will Microsoft even delete those altogether, or should I use another program to remove them, or just find those folders and delete them manually? (That's a tactic I learned from another anti-spyware website.) I'll leave them for now since they seem to be staying put, except for that last one, the 'Possible Browser Hijack' entry.

Hello Dan

I have a rule "Don't ask victims to clear the restore files unless there is evidence that they are infected", I had no evidence, but now I do, so here's a job for you to do.

Those trojans will be in the quarantine section of MAS, just delete them.

Right click on MAS icon in the taskbar, choose open MAS, click tools>spyware scan>manage spyware quarantine and mark them all for removal. If you fear a browser hijacker, they show up in HJT so just post a new log and I can tell you.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
Please delete your temporary files.

Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start >My Computer)

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the bottom of the fly out window.

On the very first tab (General) you will see a button labelled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.

Make sure the following are checked:Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin
Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder).

I deleted the system restore files and deleted the temp files, except 2 wouldn't delete, saying they were in use. I then rebooted in Safe Mode and removed them that way. I rebooted into regular mode and there were 4 files in the temp directory again. Anyway, I ran Microsoft Spyware again, and this time only this entry is still there:

So then I allowed MS Spyware to remove it. On a whim I ran Ad-Aware again, and it found all the Aurora stuff again! So I let Ad-Aware delete them, and I noticed two messages from MS Spyware notifying me of an attempt to change a webpage. So, again I re-ran MS Spyware, and again it only detected:

located in 'Internet Explorer Search page:'

So that entry keeps coming up, and when I delete it it seems to reinstall the drsnsrch entries. It appears I'm going in a circle now. Fortunately subsequent Ad-Aware scans only brings up the browser hijack attempts, no more references to Aurora.

Extract (unzip) the files inside into their own folder called FindQoologic.

Open the FindQoologic folder.
