With my W98 pc (that freezes up and acts unstable) I have found that in SafeMode immediately after booting when I Start/Settings/ControlPanel I get this error message , ":Explorer has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down...."

If I click Details, I get "EXPLORER aused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000.0000003. ...'"

If I click Close I get to and can work with the CP.

Do you think that --coming so early after boot in Safe Mode-- this seems like an important glitch that might be causing my instability? Any suggestions for tracking the illegal operation down? ... Thanks. wdc

Have you done a thorough scan for malware?

Please go to the malware forum in my signature and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE .

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty, then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.
