  • Click Continue on the UAC. The Services window will come up.
  • Scroll down the list that pops up and find Windows Event Log
    • Right click on Windows Event Log and click Properties. The Windows Event Log window will come up.
    • On the General tab, about half way down the page look for Starup type:. Click the down arrow in the box and select Automatic
    • Below that underneath Service status: click Start then click Apply, OK.
  • Close the Services window and Reboot.

Clear the Event Logs

  • Click the Start Orb
  • Right click on Computer and click on Manage
  • Click (Continue) on the UAC screen. The Computer Management window will come up.
  • On the left side of the window click the arrow beside Event Viewer
  • Click the arrow beside Windows Logs
  • Right click on Application and click Clear Log
  • Right click on System and click Clear Log
  • Close the Computer Management window and Reboot.

Hi pa.pete,

Let me back up a minute. In post #30 when you said:

On the computer management screen when I click on the arrow next to Event Viewer, a window pops up that says "Event log service is unavailable, Verify that the service is running" I didn't go any farther as I didn't know what to do with that.

Did you get a window that looked like this
Posted Image

If you did, You should still be able to click the down arrow beside Windows Logs and right-click on the Application and System logs and choose “Clear Log” from the menu.
Posted Image

If you can do that, reboot the computer and then try to turn the EventLog service on (directions are in Step 1, post #33.

After that, whether it worked or not:

Posted Image OTL Custom Scan

1. Please copy the text in the code box below and paste it in the Posted Image box in OTL. To do that:
  • Highlight everything inside the code box, right click the mouse and click Copy.
HKEYLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog

2. Re-open OTL on the desktop. To do that:
  • Double click on the Posted Image OTL icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed.
  • You will see a console like the one below:

  • In the Extra Registry section click the button beside Use Safelist<---Important
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.

  • Click the Posted Image button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so.
  • Let the scan run uninterrupted. The scan won't take long.

Things For Your Next Post:
1. Let me know if you got the event logs cleared and the EventLog service started.
2. The OTL.txt log
3. The Extras.txt log
4. How is the computer running now?

Hello again,

The contents of the registry key looks fine. In post #34 you said that the eventlog service still wouldn't run. Do you remember if it gave any error codes or error messages? If you don't remember exactly what they were, please try to start the service again and record any error codes or error messages it gives if it won't start.

Step-1.

Start Event Service

  • Click the Start Orb. Type the following and press the ENTER key.

    services.msc

  • Click Continue on the UAC. The Services window will come up.
  • Scroll down the list that pops up and find Windows Event Log
    • Right click on Windows Event Log and click Properties. The Windows Event Log window will come up.
    • On the General tab, about half way down the page look for Starup type:. Click the down arrow in the box and select Automatic
    • Below that underneath Service status: click Start then click Apply, OK.
  • Close the Services window and Reboot.

Step-2.

Things For Your Next Post:
1. Let me know if the eventlog started
2. List any error codes or error messages it gave if it didn't start.

Hi pa.pete,

Thanks for the information. I think we're closing in on it. One of the most common reasons for the 4201 error code is due to a permission being reset. Let's try this first.

Step-1.

Fix EventLog Permissions

  • Restart Windows in Safe Mode
    To do that....
    • Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. An Advanced Boot Options screen will come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.
      Posted Image
    • Use the down arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and push the ENTER key.

NOTE: If you miss the Boot menu, continue to let the machine boot up. Then restart the machine and start tapping the F8 key.
Very Important: Never restart the computer while it is booting up. Bad things, including the computer not being able to load Windows, can occur!
  • Open the C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI folder
  • Right-click on the RtBackup folder and click Properties
    Posted Image
  • Click the Security tab, and click the Edit button.
    Posted Image
  • Click Add
    Posted Image
  • Type SYSTEM and press the ENTER key
    Posted Image
  • In the Permissions for System section, click the box beside Full Control under the Allow column
    Posted Image
  • Click OK, and then click Yes when asked for confirmation.
    Posted Image

Restart Windows (in Normal mode), and check the EventLog service again. If resetting the permission didn't restart it automatically, start the service according to the directions in post #39.

Step-2.

Things For Your Next Post:
1. Let me know if you were able to get the EventLog service started.

godawgs,
I followed your steps in safe mode, when I added system in for permission on the RT backup it would not allow it permission, however there was an option in there for Administraitor radwick\pc so I clicked on that and restarted in normal mode. I believe I can clear the logs now, before when I clicked on the arrow next to Event viewer I would always get the error, now you can see in the screen shot I am able to open the event viewer and the windows logs.
Should I clear the logs like you stated in a previous post?

Hi,

Trying the admin. account next was a good catch. You may not have to clear the logs. First we need to see if the EventLog service has started. Then we can check to see if the service is reading the logs.

Step-1.

Check EventLog Service

  • Click the Start Orb. Type the following and press the ENTER key.

    services.msc

  • Click Continue on the UAC. The Services window will come up.
  • Scroll down the list that pops up and find Windows Event Log
  • Right click on Windows Event Log and click Properties. The Windows Event Log window will come up.
IF: The Startup type box shows Automatic and the Service status line says Started, click the Cancel button and close the Services window. If they don't show that continue with the next steps.
    • On the General tab, about half way down the page look for Starup type:. Click the down arrow in the box and select Automatic
    • Below that underneath Service status: click Start then click Apply, OK.
  • Close the Services window and Reboot.

Next you want to get new OTL logs to see if the EventLog service is working properly without having to clear the logs.

Step-2.

Posted Image OTL Scan

Please re-open OTL
  • Double click the Posted Image on your desktop. Vista /7 users right click and click Run as Administrator. Make sure all other windows are closed .
  • You will see a console like the one below:

    Posted Image
  • At the top of the console click the greyed out None button.<---Very Important
  • Make sure the Output box at the top is set to Standard Output.
  • In the Extra Registry section, click the Use Safelist button.<---Very Important
  • Click the Posted Image button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so.
  • Let the scan run uninterrupted. The scan won't take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows, OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
I Do Not want you to post these files.

Instead, open the Extras.txt file. Look at the end of the file for the ========== Last 10 Event Log Errors ========== section and see if the error message Error reading Event Logs: The Event Service is not operating properly or the Event Logs are corrupt! is still there or if there is a list of Event Log Errors. If the error message is gone, let me know. If it isn't , go on with the directions below.

If the Error reading Event Logs: The Event Service is not operating properly or the Event Logs are corrupt! message is still there, Go back to post #33 and follow the steps under Clear the Event Logs.

Then follow the directions under Step 2. in this post a second time and let me know if the event logs are back.

Step-3.

Things For Your Next Post:
1. Let me know what happened with the Event Logs
2. Tell me if any other problems or issues exist.

godawgs,
The first time I ran the OTL. in the extras txt. Last 10 event log errors, it listed an error I can't remember what it was and I forgot to save it. I followed post #33 and cleared the logs, then ran the OTL again, in the last 10 event log errors it lists 2 errors now "invalid parameter" and "display is not active". Everything else seems to be working fine.

Please post the last Extras.txt log. It should be on the desktop. If you can't find it, follow Step 2 in post 43 but this time post the Extras.txt log
