Hi pa.pete,

Man that was great news about the Event Logs. I want to run one final on line scan to look for any remnants that might not have shown up in the logs. We always do this because sometime OTL just doesn't catch some stragglers. The online scanners use virus signatures and are more likely to catch those things.. If that is clean we'll be ready to wrap this puppy up.

Step-1.

Run ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista / 7 users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.
  • Please go here then click on: Posted Image

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically. The scan may take several hours.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • If the scan didn't find anything it may not produce a log. Just let me know that.
  • If it does produce a log, copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Step-2.

Things For Your Next Post:
1. The ESET log or tell me it didn't produce one.

godawgs,
I tried to run the eset online scanner and I couldn't get it to run. When I click on the scanner button the terms of use window pops up, I check the accept box and the window goes blank with a red X in the corner (no active x control to allow). I have disabled my antivirus and also windows firewall, I then tried adding the web site to my trusted sites and still had the same results. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Pete

Hi Pete,

See if the directions on this page will solve the problem. You need an activex control installed. This page shows you how to do it.

Hi godawgs,
I finally got that to run by creating a new administrative log on, then it worked fine. It looks like I still had some viruses though.
Thanks for the help and Have a good day,

Hi Pete,

Actually it only found two things. That is not uncommon. That's why we run the online scan.
All of the C:\_OTL\MovedFiles entries had already been found and dealt with by OTL.

Let me know if you're having any other issues. In the meantime, I'll get with my instructor and see if he agrees the we can start wrapping things up. You have some programs that need to be updated to help with security and it's important that we remove all the tools we have used.

Hi Pete,

The last OTL scan I saw was back on Feb. 26th. The DailyBibleGuide was still showing up in the Installed Programs list. I want to see if Revo Unistaller will get rid of it. Then we need to update your Java, Adobe Reader and Adobe Flash programs to help make the computer more secure. And I want to get one final OTL log to be sure we haven't picked anything up in the last 8 days.
Assuming it is clean, I promise we'll be ready to clean up our tools, post some good prevention practices and we're done. Hang in there with me.
I know this looks like a bunch of steps, but take your time and if you have any questions stop and ask. It might help if you print them out before you start.

Step-1

Make a Fresh Restore Point

For Vista and Windows 7:
  • Click the Start Orb. Click Control Panel. Click System and Maintenance
  • Click System
  • In the left column under Tasks, click Advance System Settings and accept the warning if you get one
  • Click the System Protection Tab
  • In the Available Disks box put a ckeck mark in the box next to OS (?:) (System). Your drive letter will be shown in place of the ?

Note: It may take some time for the system to populate the Available Disks box, so be patient.
  • Click the Create button at the bottom
  • Type in a name fo the restore point, i.e: Before Revo Run
  • Click Create
  • A small System Protection window will come up telling you a Restore Point is being created.
  • Another System Protection window will come up telling you the Restore Point has been created, click OK
  • Click OK again.
  • Close the Control Panel

Step-2.

Run Revo Uninstaller

Download Revo Uninstaller to the desktop.

  • Double click ( Vista/7 users may need to right click the file and click Run as Administrator) the revosetup.exe installation file on the desktop to run the installer.
  • Let it install to the default location.
  • Double click ( Vista/7 users may need to right click the file and click Run as Administrator) the new Revo Uninstaller Icon on the desktop to start the program.

You will now see a list of installed programs that Revo Uninstaller can remove.
  • Locate the program you are uninstalling---DailyBibleGuide
  • Right Click the program Icon then choose Uninstall.
  • Click yes to the warning and choose the Uninstall Mode
  • Choose the Advanced option and then click Next.
  • This will launch the programs built in uninstaller. Be patient it can take several seconds.
  • Once the Uninstaller is done click Next.
  • Revo Uninstaller will now scan for leftover information. Be patient it can take several seconds.
  • Once this scan is done click Next.
  • You will then be presented with the leftover entries found by Revo Uninstaller
  • Look at ALL of the entries to ensure they relate to the uninstall.
  • Next click Select All > Delete to remove the entries.
  • Click Next.
  • If there are any program file folders left over you will be presented with a list to be removed.
  • Again look at ALL of the entries to ensure they are related to the uninstall.
  • Click Select All > Delete to remove the entries.
  • Click Finish to go back to the uninstall list.
  • Close the program

Step-3.

Update Programs

1. Please click the Start Orb, click Control Panel. Under the Programs heading click Uninstall a program
2. In the list of programs installed, locate the following program(s):

Java™ 6 Update 26
Java™ 6 Update 3

3. Click on each program to highlight it and click Change/Remove. (Vista/7 users: right click the program and click Uninstall
4. After the programs have been uninstalled, close the Installed Programs window and the Control Panel.
5. Reboot the computer.

Step-4.

: Update Adobe Reader:
  • Open Adobe Reader
  • Click Help on the menu at the top
  • Click Check for Updates
  • Allow any updates to be downloaded and installed
NOTE: Whether you use Adobe Reader, Acrobat or Foxit Reader to read pdf files you need to disable Javascript in the program. There is an exploit out there now that can use it to get on your PC. For Adobe Reader: Click Start, All Programs, Adobe Reader, Edit, Preferences, Click on Javascript in the left column and uncheck Enable Acrobat Javascript. Click OK Close program. It's the same for Foxit Reader except Preferences is under the Tools menu, and you uncheck Enable Javascript Actions.

Step-5.

Update Adobe Flash Player

  • Please go to the Adobe Webpage
  • At the bottom of the page click on the Adobe Flash Player link.
  • On the next page UNCHECK the box next to Yes, install McAfee Security Plan Plus - optional
  • Click the Download now button
Please note, depending on your settings, you may have to temporarily disable your antivirus software.

Step-6.

Posted Image UPDATE JAVA

Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version from Here or Here and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition". You will see the current Java version and update number under listed under the heading. Example: The newest update is Java SE 7u3
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • On the JSE Downloads page, click the button to "Accept License Agreement".
  • Under the Java SE Runtime Environment 7u3 heading:
  • For Windows 64 bit systems, look for Windows x64, click the jre-7u3-windows-x64.exe file and save it to your desktop.
  • Close the browser and any open windows.
  • Right click the jre-7u3-windows-x64.exe file on the desktop and click Run As Administrator. You may be asked to supply the Administrator password, or click Continue on the UAC.
  • When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
  • If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it. I recommend that you don't install the toolbar.
After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on the Delete Temporary Files Window
[Note:] This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version. It's on the Update tab in Java in the Control Panel.

[Note:] The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial start up time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > You will have to be in Classic View to see Java(It looks like a coffee cup). Double-click on Java click the Advanced Tab click Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and reboot your computer.

Step-7.

  • When the scan completes, it will open OTL.Txt and Extras.txt. These files are also saved in the same location as OTL (it should be on your desktop).
