So here is the components I have picked out so far..

CPU- Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor
CPU Cooler- Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 76.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
Motherboard - ASRock P67 Extreme4 Gen3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard

Hard Drive - Seagate Barracuda 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive
GPU - Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 3GB Video Card
Case - NZXT Phantom (White) ATX Full Tower Case
PSU - Corsair 750W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply
Optical Drive - Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer
Monitor - Asus VS248H-P 24.0"

There are a few things I am worried about. The motherboard I had initially heard good things about, but after reading reviews on Newegg it seems like quite a few people have problems with this board. Also in the future when prices come down I would definitely like the option to crossfire the 7970, am unsure if the 750w would be enough to do this.

And finally had a question about the monitors. I found 2 that looked pretty close to the same for about the same price, and am unsure if I picked the right one.

I know the one I picked out doesn't have built in speakers (which is no problem) and also doesn't have DVI (can get adapters to get all 3 monitors connected to GPU via HDMI). However the one I did pick out is a little cheaper, $45 total, and also has a much higher contrast ratio (truth be told I really have no idea what this affects). So would just like to get some input or advice on either of these, or even an alternate monitor (would need to be around same price)

A couple things about your build. First, understand using an aftermarket cooler voids the warranty of your CPU. That may not be a concern for you, but it is something important you should understand. If you want an aftermarket cooler because you heard the stock coolers were no good, then you heard wrong. Only the stock OEM coolers for both Intel and AMD CPUs are warrantied with the CPUs for 3 years. This means if the OEM cooler fails, and in the rare event the CPU fails too, both will be replaced free. No aftermarket cooler will cover damage to the CPU.

When researching parts, it is important to visit the part's webpage for compatibility issues. If you check your motherboard's page here, on the left you will see the QVLs (qualified vendors lists) showing which CPUs and RAM that board supports. You must buy a CPU from the list, but there are too many RAM makers and models for the board makers to test them all, so you must buy RAM with the same specs as RAM listed to ensure compatibility.

Disappointingly, Sapphire has failed to state your PSU requirements when running two cards, except to say you need 2x150W PCIe connectors. That said, your 750W Corsair should be fine, but you might want to run through a good calculator to be sure. See my canned text on sizing and selecting PSUs below.

The specs on those two monitors are so similar, I would go for price too. Note the contrast specs while vastly different are still super good regardless. Actually, contrast ratios are something to be taken with a grain of salt, especially with published numbers in the millions like those are. Typically anything better than 1000:1 is considered good.

Fancy cases are nice, but I pay attention to what is on my monitors and prefer my cases to sit quietly and discreetly off to the side, and NOT bring attention to themselves. The case has two primary functions, (1) to provide a sturdy, "true" (exactly 90.0° bends) environment to protect the components inside from twisting stresses, kicks and bumps, and (2) to provide adequate front-to-back cool air flow through the case. That NZXT case will do it, but for me, because it does not have removable, washable air filters, I would pick something else. While I am not a fan of fancy lights in a case (they do nothing for performance, consume some power, generate some heat, and do nothing for performance - worth repeating) I do like the Antec Nine Hundred Two V3 in your price range, or to save a little money, the Antec Three Hundred is an excellent case for the money.

Use the eXtreme PSU Calculator Lite to determine your minimum and recommended power supply unit (PSU) requirements. Plan ahead and plug in all the hardware you think you might have in 2 or 3 years (extra drives, bigger or 2nd video card, more RAM, etc.). Be sure to read and heed the notes at the bottom of the calculator page. I recommend setting Capacitor Aging to 10% and both TDP and system load to 100%. These steps ensure the supply has adequate head room for stress free (and perhaps quieter) operation, as well as future hardware demands. Research your video card and pay particular attention to the power supply requirements for your card listed on your video card maker's website. If not listed, check a comparable card (same graphics engine and RAM) from a different maker. The key specifications, in order of importance are:

  • Current (amperage or amps) on the +12V rail,
  • Efficiency,
  • Total wattage.
Don’t try to save a few dollars by getting a cheap supply! Digital electronics, including CPUs, RAM, and today's advanced graphics cards, need clean, stable power. A good, well chosen supply will provide years of service and upgrade wiggle room. Look for power supply brands listed under the "Reputable" column of PC Mech's PSU Reference List. Another excellent read is Tom’s Hardware, Who’s Who In Power supplies: Brands, Labels, And OEMs. Note that some case retailers “toss in” a generic or inadequate PSU just to make the case sale. Be prepared to “toss out” that supply for a good one with sufficient power.

PSUs are inherently inefficient. Most PSUs have an efficiency rating of around 70%. This means for every 100 watts of power a PSU draws from the wall, only 70 watts is delivered to the motherboard, with the rest wasted in the form of heat. The best supplies are 85 to 90% efficient, and as expected, cost more. A quality supply with an efficiency rating equal to or greater than 80% requires a better design using higher quality (tighter tolerances) components. To ensure a quality, efficient PSU, select one that is 80 PLUS certified and is EnergyStar Compliant. 80 PLUS certified PSUs are required to have fairly linear efficiencies. This is important to ensure the PSU is running at or near peak efficiency regardless the load or power demands. Non-linear PSUs typically are most efficient when the load is in a narrow range between 70 and 90% of the PSU’s capacity and the efficiency may drop dramatically above and below those amounts.

Too big of a PSU hurts nothing but your budget. Your computer will draw from the PSU only what it needs, not what the PSU is capable of delivering. If a computer needs 300 watts it will draw 300 watts regardless if the PSU is a 400W, 650W, or 1000W PSU. In turn, the PSU, regardless its size, will draw from the wall only what it needs to support the computer. In this example, it will draw 300 watts, plus another 45 – 90 watts, depending on the PSU’s inefficiency.

As noted, the eXtreme Calculator determines minimum and recommended requirements. If the calculator (with the changes I suggested) recommends a 400 watt minimum, a quality 400W supply will serve you just fine. However, a quality 550W – 600W supply will have, among other things, larger heat sinks to dissipate potentially more heat. It might have a larger fan too. The 400W supply will run most of the time closer to capacity, while the larger supply will be loafing along, rarely breaking a sweat. To help the smaller heat sinks get rid of the wasted 80 watts (20% of 400) of heat, the fan in the 400W supply may need to run full speed, while the fan in the larger supply, with bigger sinks just loafs along too – but in near silence. Also, it is typical for manufacturers to use higher quality parts, design, and manufacturing techniques in their higher power supplies.

Note: Capacitor Aging. All electronics “age” over time. Electrons flowing through components bang around and create friction and heat causing wear and tear, altering the electrical characteristics of the device. Over time, this weakens the device resulting in eventual failure. Power supplies have always suffered profoundly from aging effects resulting in a loss of capacity. In a large part, this is due to capacitor aging though in recent years, capacitor technologies have improved in that area. The best PSUs use the best (and most expensive) capacitors which suffer less from aging effects than older capacitor types. If planning on buying a new, high-end PSU, setting capacitor aging to 10% may result in a more realistic recommendation. However, headroom “buffer” will be significantly reduced. You can expect your PSU to last 5 years or longer. Since it is better to buy too big rather than too small, and since it is hard to predict what your power requirements will be in 3 years, using 30% for Capacitor Aging ensures you have enough headroom for virtually any upgrade.

Don't forget to budget for a good UPS with AVR (automatic voltage regulation). Surge and spike protectors are inadequate and little more than fancy, expensive extension cords.

Thank you for the reply. I wasn't aware about the voided warranty if you use aftermarket cooler. I think every computer I've bought before trying to build this one has had a Intel CPU in it and have never had any problems with any processors. So that being said I was actually looking forward to learning about OCing and eventually over clocking my new pc a little. So I think I will still get the cooler and try to OC eventually, never the less I appreciate the info.

For the video card, I already checked the website, and like you said they don't really have anything listed for the 7970, so I am gonna stick with the 750w and if in the future when I crossfire if it requires more I will replace the PSU.

For the monitors I have been going back in forth quite a bit. For the extra $15 a piece I get built in speakers (yea I know they are probably crap but would be nice to have as a last resort) will also have a DVI, and that would save me from having to buy an adapter. I'm also still looking at other options other than those 2, but don't really see anything within the same price range and size.

Case wise, I was originally looking at a different one but after checking several sites and reading reviews went with the Phantom. I'm not too big on lights and fancy looks, would definitely take performance over looks. I had not noticed that this case did not come with any removable air filters, and to be honest I didn't really know that was something I should consider. I chose this one just because I really liked the way the inside was, looks very easy to manage cables and provide good air flow, and have to be honest I love the black inside so that was a bonus. But I have also been looking at the two Antec's you suggested, so far both look like very sturdy cases.

Lastly, and maybe most importantly, like I mentioned in the first post. I was originally recommended the ASRock P67 Extreme4 Gen3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard, and at first glance it does seem like a awesome board, but after reading all the reviews on newegg I have to say I am a little concerned about the board. It seems like quite a few people are having some of the same problems with this board. Would love to have another motherboard to compare to if anyone knows a similar one.

Well, overclocking voids the warranty too so if your are going for it, might as well go all in. ;)

I had not noticed that this case did not come with any removable air filters, and to be honest I didn't really know that was something I should consider.

Well, it is critical to keep the interior clean of heat trapping dust - ESPECIALLY if you will be taxing the system with overclocking and gaming. With two computers in my office, one with air filters, one without, I had to lug the filter-less computer outside to blast out the dust 4 times to every 1 time for the computer with filters. Not only is lugging a heavy computer around a real pain, messing with all the cables makes it worse and has the potential of something breaking. So I will never have a case without filters again.

Your concern with the selected Mobo. Whichever Mobo review you read, a lot are complaints, just our nature. What seems like the same problem can be caused by many issues and not always the Mobo itself. One review I was reading for a PC case had heaps of people saying that the paint falls of or chips when you touch it. I did not recommend that case.

I have had no issues with Asrock so will still use and recommend them.
