MS security Essentials sets Windows defender exactly this way.

So this is normal and all the files look perfect.

I will continue to study this one with my instructor and get back to you on it.

Step 1.


Open Internet Explorer > Tools >Internet Options > Security > Click ‘trusted sites’ icon >Click Sites > uncheck ‘require server verification’.

Then add following sites :

http://*.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
http://*.windowsupdate.com
http://update.microsoft.com
http://update.micros...v6/default.aspx

Click Close > Apply > OK. This is known to help the GenuineValidated Windows, in some cases, but not always.

Try updates again.

If it does not work go on to Step 2.


Step 2.

OTL Fix


We need to run an OTL Fix

• Please reopen on your desktop.
• Copy and Paste the following code into the textbox.

  [createrestorepoint]
  

• Push
• OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
• Click the OK button.
• A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.
• If the machine reboots, the log will be located at C:\_OTL\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log, where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date and the time of the tool run.

After run please try updates again, if it does not work then go on to Step 3.


Step 3.

Go here and run the fixit.

Try updates again. If it does not work go on to Step 4.


Step 4.

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the program then run or just re run the copy you have if you still have it.

On the start repairs tab select advanced mode and click start

Select the items in the red surround (remove the ticks from the rest ), you will have to go down the page to get the Repair MSI ticked (pictured in picture 2 below) and tick restart system when finished then click Start



If it does not work go on to Step 5.


Step 5.

Disable real time protection in MS Security Essentials.

Then try updates again.

Once you test it please re enable real time protection before posting results of these steps.

Went through all the steps successfully, and still no good. It seemed to think for a long time about installing updates after I ran the Windows Repair (all in one), but still no good, not even after turning real time protection off for MS Essentials.

I consulted with my instructor and it might be an issue with your copy of IE 8.

So we will first try to correct it and then run Windows Repair again.


Step 1.

Please download the attached file to your desktop.

Right click the unzipped file and Run as administrator.

Once it completes reboot your computer and try updates again.

If not go to Step 2.


Step 2.

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the program then run

Go to step 2 and allow it to run Disc check

Once that is done then go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC

On the start repairs tab select advanced mode and click start

Select the items in the red surround (remove the ticks from the rest ), you will have to go down the page to get the Repair MSI ticked (pictured in picture 2 below) and tick restart system when finished then click Start



Please let me know the status of updates.

Well what are the current issues with the computer?

We may need to do a repair/upgrade install of Vista SP2. Do you or can you get a copy of Vista 32 bit SP2?

We have a few things that have not responded to our corrective tools and the symptoms you have indicate an underliying corruption of the operating system that will require either a repair/upgrade install or a factory restore.

Here are the major considerations:

Factory Restore


What is needed:

• Access to your recovery partition on your computer.
• Backup of your files.
• Disks and serial numbers for all your programs that did not come with the computer.

What happens:

• The computer is brought back to the state it was when you bought it.
• You will have to upgrade Vista to SP2 and all updates since SP2.
• You must reinstall all the programs you added since purchasing and any upgrades to them.
• All the files you copied off will need to be transferred back for your use.

How long does it take:

• About 2 hours to do the factory restore.
• Time to do service pack updates about 1 hour.
• Time to reinstall added programs and files depends on the count of each.

Pluses:

• Partition is on your computer so no need to hunt for something else.
• Everything will be like new.

Minuses:

• Must have all installation media for additional programs and serial numbers if any to install.
• Time to complete is longer.

Repair/Upgrade Install


What is needed:

• A windows 32-bit SP2 Installation disk or slipstream to SP2 an earlier version.

What happens:

• After the repair/upgrade install you will have to upgrade Vista the amount since SP2.
• Your programs and files will be unaffected.

How long does it take:

• About 2 hours or less if all goes well.

Pluses:

• Minimal changes to your programs and files.
• Shortest amount of time to complete.

Minuses:

• Must have a Vista 32-bit SP2 installation disk.
• Slightly lower success rate than the factory restore.

There are many factors you need to consider in deciding which path to take. If you have questions please ask me and take an appropriate amount of time to make this decision so that you are comfortable with your decision.
