Hi,

I am running a Dell Vistro with Microsoft Vista software.

I am trying to delete MP4 files but even after going through the "Taking Ownership" routine I still cannot delete them.

Any ideas please?

Thanks for trying, but still no joy.

When I try to delete an MP4 file I keep getting messages saying

"You need permission to perform this action"

I am the only user, and am logged in as admisistrator, have done the Vista requirement of "Taking ownership" of the files, but there still seems to be some sort of protection with these MP4 files.

I can delete all other types of file except MP4.

Thanks for the info.

I neglected to check which forum I was in, I should have been in the Vista forum

I have gone through the routine to create full permissions but still cannot delete MP4 files.

Will try in safe mode tomorrow when I boot up in the morning, but this is not just a one off problem, it may become a regular requirement.

You will note that I have moved your topic to the Vista forum

I strongly recommend you try all the options outlined including the chkdsk and the Safe Mode AND disabling your anti-virus.

If all fails including as well checking YOUR permission on that MP folder and SEE if when you MOVE one MP4 file from that folder to a NEW folder, can you then delete it.

Hello Macboatmaster,

I am still having problems, I am the only user on this PC, but I keep getting messages saying that I am not authorised to run chkdsk /f, I have tried to get into safe mode, holding down the F8 as advised but it still boots up normally.

I have tried the Moveonboot program, but it would not delete the files on my removable storage disc. I did delete one MP4 file this way that was copied to my desktop, but I cannot move the MP4 files, only copy them. There seems to be some kind of security on them.

So all in all I am not doing too well.

either I missed this info or you did not make it clear...
copy any data you want off the usb flash drive to a different drive... then format the drive and move the data back

Hi Happyrock,

This method has worked, I copied to drive C and re formatted the zip drive, I can now delete using Moveonboot for items in drive C, at the next startup.

Hi happyrock,

They still will not delete, but I am now also having problems with Windows Explorer closing down and restarting occasionally, I tried to sort this by doing a system restore, but none of them work.
I am toying with the idea of doing a System Repair but as I cannot get the computer to startup in safe mode I cannot use the Vista repair routine, I presume that it will have to be restarted from the CD.

yep on the repair from the cd
prior to doing it try running chkdsk /r and if that doesn't help, run the repair

Well things go from bad to worse.

Cannot get into safe mode.

Command prompt will not allow me to do check disc.

System restore does not work.

PC will not boot from disc.

When I purchased the computer I set up a recovery partition as recommended, two of the items in the tools folder are RestoreSystem.exe another is PCRestore.exe should I use one of these to repair the Windows ?
