I know it is impacting your performance. I am doing all my work for this site on a 2003 Sony desktop and for XP testing I use a 2003 Dell laptop so 6 years is short to me :yes:

Price the memory online but also look at a resale shop it can be very inexpensive there as well.

No its exactly the same as it was, splash screen doesn't respond to my tapping of the F8 key. I know I am doing it correctly as I've booted up in safe mode many times before.

Did you merge the file after you unzipped it? Did it say it merged OK?

I unzipped the file which then gave the option to open which I did then I right clicked and got the option to merge which I clicked, I then got a message saying Safe Boot Mode successfully added to registry. Tried to boot in safe mode today and the same thing happens

Step 1.

Here is how to find the eset log.

  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.



Step 2.

Safe Mode

Safely shutdown the computer.

Hit the start key and immediately begin tapping the space bar and continue tapping it until you get a black screen that gives you the option to push F8 to enter Safe Mode.


Were you able to boot to the advanced options menu and then on to safe mode?

CompCav I opened Notepad copy and pasted C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. into it clicked "File"and clicked "open" I then get a mesage saying "The text in the unamed file has changed do you want to save the changes" I click no and it takes me to another window entitled "open" it has three boxes 1. File name 2. Files of type. 3. Encoding. 1st box has *.txt. 2nd box has text documents. 3rd box has ANSI i click on open and nothing happens. If I paste this C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. I get a message saying "Path does not exist. Please varify the correct path was given.
The computer is so slow its like working on dial up even programs not requiring to go online.
I will try the reboot method and post my result

OK try this:

Click Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >> Windows Explorer

The Windows Explorer opens.
Along the top you will see a magnifying glass Search button click it.

Click All files and folders
Type log.txt in the top box

Under Look in: use the drop down arrow to select Local Hard drives (C:)

Then click Search

This search will take some time so please be patient.

Several log.txt files may appear, please open them one at a time and check to see if they are the right one.

When you find the correct one, just click Edit >> Select All, Edit >> Copy

Then post it in a reply with Paste

I tried a reboot with pressing the spacebar and it did exactly the same as before, first splash screen then the windows logo loading screen

Step 1.

Please run this disk check call chkdsk:
Dakeyras has a nice little tutorial on it here


Step 2.

Downlaod and install Auslogics Disk Defrag
During the install uncheck the choice to install the toolbar and uncheck using ask.com for searches

Then run and defrag your hard drive.


Step 3.

Click Start > Run

Type sfc /scannow then click OK

If it asks you for a CD please insert your Windows CD and continue. If you do not have the CD just click retry (may have to several times) and see if it can finish.

Please try F8 again and let me know how it does

OK CompCav I ran the search for the ESET log for over 6 hours and it only came up with TDSS logs. The computer is painfully slow and it took over four minutes for Firefox to load the home page. I have also now noticed that whenever I download anything it doesn't show up in the small "Downloads" window, the window pops up but it is empty. I get the message at the bottom of the page saying "All downloads have completed". I am having to go into my documents and open the download file and find it in there.
Also sometimes when I close a small window it leaves a blank space where it has been on the window behind it and it takes a couple of minutes for this to rectify itself.
I downloaded and ran Auslogistics Disk Defrag , I tried to run the Sfc/scannow but it justs keeps on saying "
The CD you provided is the wrong CD even though there is no CD loaded and I havn't got a windows CD

Did you run check disk also?

Please re run eset and try to get the log this time.

Yes I ran check disk, I also tried to reboot in safe mode but its just as before. I will re-run ESET and try and post the log!!!!!
