Hi, I got a new SATA drive for my laptop. It is brand new but I have an issue with SATA to USB.

When I connect it to my computer via USB it does not get recognized by my computer.

I am confused as my other SATA drive (when connected using the same SATA to USB device) gets recognized without fail.

Is there something I need to do to the new drive before it will auto-detect?

It makes the noise when you plug in the USB but then nothing else happens.

EDIT: Windows now detects the drive but requests it be formatted before use. However, every time I try to format, after about 3 minutes it fails. Saying: 'Windows was unabke to complete the format'
Cheers.

Try wiping the drive with http://www.dban.org/ make sure you choose the correct drive.
Then;
Run the HDDs diagnostics tool;
Make sure you select the tool that is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.

Depending on the program it'll create a bootable floppy or a bootable CD.
If the downloaded file is the .iso type use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn the .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option) and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba then unfortunately you're out of luck because Toshiba do not provide a diagnostic tool.
Post back with the results.
