Hello,

For the past two weeks I've noticed occasional "trojans" being found by my anti-virus software. My computer has been having great difficulty starting up and displays "Catalys Control Centre" errors upon startup. I also recieved messages last week of no memory and RAM problems; however after some experimentation and running Malwarebytes those have gone away. Additionally, when I click on links in search engines I am redirected and I'm unable to enter secure sites such as my email provider.

Please see my OTL log below. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you very much.

OK lets kill it now

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

    Posted Image

    Posted Image
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

Hi Essexboy,

First off, thanks again for the help.

I downloaded ComboFix to my desktop, turned off my antivirus (McAfee Security Center - even though ComboFix gave me a warning that it was still enabled), and ran the program. About 5 or so minutes into running my computer just shut down. When it rebooted automatically I couldn't find a log anywhere and the problems were the exact same as they had been. In fact, at that point my computer wouldn't let me connect to the internet. After running a system restore, here I am, with internet access again. Did I not properly disable my antivirus? I turned off scanning and the firewall in the program.

Thank you very much for your continued help.

I should also probably add that my version on McAfee Security Center is 11.0 and the instructions in the supplied link (as well as most everywhere I found online) refers to a different version with a different configuration than I have. My Security Center doesn't have the mentioned setup nor an advanced settings option.

Thanks again.

When you were unable to connect to the internet was it due to IE not starting stating the key had been marked for deletion ?

Lets use a different tool.. I could delete the bad file however, it may cause unintended consequences. So initially I would like to use an automated tool

Download AVPTool from Here to your desktop

Run the programme you have just downloaded to your desktop (it will be randomly named )

First we will run a virus scan

Click the cog in the upper right
Posted Image

Select down to and including your main drive, once done select the Automatic scan tab and press Start Scan
Posted Image

Allow AVP to delete all infections found
Once it has finished select report tab (last tab)
Select Detected threats report from the left and press Save button
Save it to your desktop and attach to your next post

Now the Analysis

Rerun AVP and select the Manual Disinfection tab and press Start Gathering System Information

Posted Image

On completion click the link to locate the zip file to upload and attach to your next post

That scan completely destroyed my computer. I followed the directions, ran the scan, selected to delete the infected files. Upon restarting, my computer went straight to "system repair." It just cycles in system repair without being able to repair itself. I've tried every option available such as system restore and restoring the factory settings. Nothing works. Windows isn't even able to start at all. I have no idea what to do. A very minor problem instantly escalated into my computer being rendered useless. I'm currently using my roommate's computer by the way.

OK lets get it back. Unfortunately the malware is changing rapidly to prevent its removal

For x32 (x86) bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to a flash drive.
For x64 bit systems download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool x64 and save it to a flash drive.

Plug the flashdrive into the infected PC.

Enter System Recovery Options.

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select English as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.

To enter System Recovery Options by using Windows installation disc:
  • Insert the installation disc.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc. If your computer is not configured to start from a CD or DVD, check your BIOS settings.
  • Click Repair your computer.
  • Select English as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account and click Next.

On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt
[*]Select Command Prompt
[*]In the command window type in notepad and press Enter.
[*]The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
[*]Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
[*]In the command window type e:\frst.exe (for x64 bit version type e:\frst64) and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
[*]The tool will start to run.
[*]When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
[*]Press Scan button.
[*]It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.[/list]

Hi Essexboy,

I'm attaching the text file. I apologize for the lag time. I only have the ability to borrow someone else's computer at certain times.

Thanks.

It seems like every single step thus far has just made it worse.

I followed the directions you gave. After running FRST and hitting 'fix,' my computer was still unable to start normally. Then, when I attempted to try it again I realized that I'm no longer even able to enter in commands. I'm now stuck with only two options "System restore" and the Dell recovery option - neither of which work.
