What are my internet connection options?

I have a older desktop running XP at my Grandmas house & Im trying to get online.My Gma has dementia & she's against any new technology.So i cant hook up internet via our cable company.I remember a long time ago I just had 2 plug in the phone line into the computer & I had internet.I dont know if somethings wrong but when I plug the phone line into thuis computer nothing happens.No new hardware wizard or anything.I know I have a modem in this desktop.So how do i get internet via a phone line?Or what are my internet connection options w/out a external modem?Please & thank u!
