I have a Compaq nx6110 laptop running XP home SP 3 and I was trying to upgrade Java. I keep getting the same error message.

The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it. Or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package.

I am logged in with admin rights. I downloaded Microsoft Fix it app and ran all the tools. I tried to install microsoft installer 3.1 but it says I already have it installed. I uninstalled Java and now I can't get it back so this lap top doesn't have java installed. I haved tried saving the file to my desktop and just running it to no avail. Don't know what else to do!! Do I really need it??

Please download JavaRa from the link in my signature below to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

I did everything you said for me to do and I get the same error message. I downloaded jre 6-30 and jre 7-2 both with no luck.

You should only need one or the other.
Boot into Safe Mode and rerun the steps from my first post please.

Went into safe mode with networking and followed the instructions. I stll get the same message.

oK please redo the steps to uninstall all java versions but do not download anything for a newer version.

I normally would not do this but our sister site WTT has a great tutorial on the issues of installing or updating Java in this topic HERE. Instead of trying to pull apart the steps and posting them here for you I am including the above link directly to the topic with notice and admiration for the staff there for their great work.
Take a look and see if the instructions will simplify everything since it includes basic and advanced steps to take in case the previous steps don't work. Let me know if it works and what part specifically resolved the issue.

I tried java msi fix and I get an error message when it was creating a restore point - unkown error 87. Then tried fixjava.zip then tried to re install java jre 6u30 and still get the same error message.

Do me a favor and try the below.

Go Start and then to Run ("Start Search" in Vista),
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK (Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows XP, it will simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it to Flyupload, and post download link.


If you don't have Windows CD....
This applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc"
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

Go Start and then Run
type in regedit and click OK


Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries Values on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive, usually D and that is why it is asking for the XP CD.
All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive letter from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!

OK strange...let me ask is your date and time correct on the bottom right?
Also can you reboot and go into the bios and check your date and time to make sure it is correct. From what I am seeing it seems the system cannot verify the date.

Try disabling the Windows Firewall then download the Offline Installer from the link Rshaffer61 gave you and try the install one more time.

If you have any other firewall installed like Zone Alarm or Comodo, disable them.

Re-enable when done.
