cant get internet

i got a loan of a friends laptop a few days ago.and when i tried to use my internet dongle it wouldnt work,i tried to change a few setting but couldnt get it to work.however the real problem is now i have gave the laptop back,it wont connect to my friends internet connection which it was doing fine before the connection is a wireless router that his brother uses for his computer and mother for her ipad,can someone tell me the settings that need to be in place,that i may have altered.it is finding the router in the network.but still doest want to let us into internet.any ideas what settings could be changed
