From the Start menu open your Computer
You should see something like this:

Posted Image

Right click your system partition (usually C) and select Properties

Posted Image

Select Tools tab and then Check now...
The second window will popup
Ensure you have ticks in both boxes
Then click Start
Windows will schedule it for the next boot
Reboot

Once that has completed:

Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories
Right click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator
When the prompt opens type the following bolded text and press enter

sfc /scannow (Note: There is a space between sfc and /scannow)

On completion reboot

Let me know then if there is any improvement

The scannow run wants the XP PRO CD to copy DLLs. When I put the CD in either the usual CD drive or an external drive, it says that I have the wrong CD. I know it is the correct XP PRO CD. I am going to reboot, but the scannow cannot complete.

OK. Obviously some system file are corrupted. So we will try with system repair. Please carefully follow the steps below:

We will do system repair. Don't worry system repair won't delete your data, installed programs, personal information, or settings. It just repairs the operating system!
Please, have your Windows XP CD-KEY ready.

  • Boot from your Windows XP CD. Insert the Windows XP CD into your computer's CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart your computer.
  • When the "Press any key to boot from CD" message appears on the screen, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD.

NOTE: If computer does not boot from CD you must change device boot order in BIOS. Read here for more information.

  • A blue screen will appear and begin loading Windows XP Setup from the CD.
  • When completed loading files, you will be presented with the following "Windows Setup" screen, and your first option. Select "To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER". DO NOT select Recovery Console.

    Posted Image

  • When presented with the screen below. press the F8 key to continue.

    Posted Image

  • Next, Windows Setup will find existing Windows XP installations. You will be asked to repair an existing XP installation, or install a fresh copy of Windows XP.
  • Press the R key.

    Posted Image

  • Windows XP will appear to be installing itself for the first time, but it will retain all of your data and settings.
  • Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to reinstall Windows XP. After you repair Windows XP, you may have to reactivate your copy of Windows XP.
  • Let me know if the bootup problem has been solved.

Ran through the Repair twice. Second time becasuse I had received the following at the end of SP3 upgrade:

NMCTXTH.EXE - Entry point not found.
The procedure entry point DecodePointer could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.DLL.

AdobeArm.EXE - The ordinal 281 could not be located in the dynamic link library MSI.DLL.

Got rhem both repairs.

Current state: PC is up on SP3. Browser is at 6.0 ( IE ). Trying to get to the Windows Update site, but can't use IE6 as it doesn't want to work properly. It's like it is not recognizing the URLs that I put in.

The original problem of hangs and freezes is worse than what it was before. I was hoping the update of IE to 8.0 would mitigate some of this stuff, but can't get to IE 8.0.

Is there a way to get IE updated to 8.0 without going through Microsoft site which I can't get to?

Didn't work. I sent the link to the download site to myself in an email. I click the link and it will open a browser window, but all it does is swap back and forth between itself and a version of itself that shows me that it is swapped out. I can't even put the shortcut to the download site in the address area because it will swap out. I will take a look later on tonight in Control Panel and see if I can do anything through that.

Hi,

Try this:

  • Exit all programs, including Internet Explorer (if it is running).
  • Click Start, and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box, and then press ENTER:

    inetcpl.cpl
  • The Internet Options dialog box appears.
  • Click the Advanced tab.
  • Under Reset Internet Explorer settings, click Reset. Then click Reset again.
  • When Internet Explorer finishes resetting the settings, click Close in the Reset Internet Explorer Settings dialog box.
  • Start Internet Explorer again.

Ok. I didn't have the benefit of your last reply, so I took a chance and clicked on the start menu and clicked on Microsoft Update, not knowing if it would work or not, but it did. I was able to get down 107 out of 108 updates followed by 8 others. The 107 included IE 8, which is what I am working off of now. I will have to go through all my programs as I see that WMP 11 got whacked and doesn't appear to be available, but that's minor.

So, I am in virtually the same state as I was in before going through the Repairs. The problem of hanging is not so bad as it was just before the Repairs, but it still exists, and just occurred as I was typing this.

I think you had mentioned that you thought the real problem was probably hardware-related. I think I remember you saying that the CD drive was showing as bad. I know that I can also increase the RAM on this PC. It has a limit of 2Gig. Those two things might have a positive effect on this PC. Probably can't hurt.

Anything besides those two items, whether software or hardware-related that you can think of that might be in play, let me know. I'm all ears, and appreciate your efforts so far.

Hi,

Please download and run WUS_Fix.exe from here.

This should restore the default registry settings related with BITS and Automatic updates.

Then let me know in your next reply how things are.

Ran WUS_Fix and so far, so good. I get the reset on Windows Update registry entries. Can you tell me what BITS is?

I will put this PC through its paces tonight. I can see a big difference immediately. I just went through an 9-minute video: Sounds fine, and there was no stutter in the video. Creating documents is fine so far. Very nice! I will give you a status later tonight.

Thanks!

In the last couple of minutes, I have experienced several hangs. I look on Task Manager and wuauclt.exe is going up and down in memory usage. When it increases, then a hang. As it is decreasing, things loosen up. Also one of the svchost.exe SYSTEM tasks running high memory usage. Do you want another run of Minitoolbox and Speccy?

BITS = Background Intelligent Transfer Service

Please run only Minitoolbox with same settings as before and post the log.
