Hi,

I'm having problem from time to time with my Hard Drive filling up. All the free space on my Hard Drive rapid get used up by some mystery application. Windows Update appears to have cause the most recent episode. Could be a bloatware problem. This has been a long term problem that occurred again on my laptop yesterday. I've been directed here from this forum thread of my original problem to see if it is cause by an infected system Hard Drive full up, not malware caused

I would be much appreciated if you could fix this problem for me.

Here are my log files:

Hi, welcome to GeeksToGo! I'm havredave, and I'll do my best to help you fix whatever it is that ails your computer.

Just a few things before we begin, to ease the process on both of us:
  • Please don't run any scanning or cleaning software without my direction, as it can make things worse and take longer in the long run.
  • Please be patient. A good cleaning can take quite a while, and usually involves many steps before it is complete. I may not post back quickly, because I often have to research issues or run ideas by my peers for a more thorough fix.
  • You may wish to print out each instruction post in case you lose Internet connectivity (using safe mode, for example), so you can complete the fix.
  • If you have any question on any step, or if something doesn't work as described, please stop and ask before we proceed. Better safe than sorry!
  • Please paste your logs into your replies instead of attaching them. This makes it far easier to review. Feel free to use multiple replies if you need to.
  • Please stick with me until I let you know we're finished. Even if the machine is running better, it doesn't mean it's clean.

Please post back and let me know you're still here and still need help, then I'll see what I can do for you. :)

Ok, great. :)

It looks like you've been looking for resolution to this problem for a long, long time. I'll try to take a slightly different approach than most of the helpers have so far, and see if we get any different results.

The utility I like to start off with when I really have no idea what's taking up my space is called WinDirStat.

It allows me to view what's on my drive(s) in a graphical fashion, so I can spot things that are gobbling up more room than they should be.

I'd like you to download and run that, and just look around a bit. Please don't delete anything yet; I'd like to know what you find is using the most space. Either we'll find out what's gobbling up the room and shouldn't be, or perhaps you'll be surprised and find that it's regular items like music or video, etc.

It takes a little bit of time to take an inventory, but once it does, it'll give you a really nice view of what's there. You can hover your mouse over the sections in the graphical map to see what each item is, and where it's at. You can also open up folders in the menu portion to see how much space each folder is taking up on the hard drive.

The graphical section will use all of the area associated with it, so don't expect to see a section of empty room there - it's meant to show what is taking up the room that's used, not to show you the usage of available room.

If you would, report back with a brief synopsis of which items are taking up the most space, and we can go from there.

My regular hours to be on forum are M-F, 8:30am - 5:00pm or so, MST (GMT-7). I do check in occasionally on weekends, but not regularly.

Hi Havredav,

I've installed WinDirStat and had a look. Nothing screams out. I've used this program before and it never really points to anything in particular and say "this part of your harddrive is been taken up by useless crap". I'm experiencing problems with harddrive space yet again. I was jumping between 2.3 GB freespace and 0.6 GB freespace. I would have to restart the computer twice to get back to that 2.3 GB freespace on the harddrive. Right now I have 330 MB of freespace, no mater how many times I restart my computer it is not getting above 1 GB. This has only started happening from today and as you can see this problem is quite silly and unacceptable.

WinDirStat does show "System Volume Information" at 1.7 GB and "pagefile.sys" at 1.2 GB.

Windows folder takes up 22.3 GB.

Norton 360 is forever telling me that the Harddrive is experiencing heavy use thank to Microsoft System Indexing.

Any of this a help? What should I be looking for, doing?

Thanks,
Emufix

Hi Havredav,

Further info, just cleared System Restore and then created a system restore point. Managed to make more freespace so now it is 1.68 GB freespace instead of 330 MB. Problem will be when I reboot my computer at some point in the futre is that this number will change again no doubt.

That "System Volume Information" folder reduced in size from 1.7 GB to 998.7 KB, i.e. it all but disappeared. "pagefile.sys" is still 1.2 GB though.

Using Windirstat, don't look for single files that are taking up masses of space. What you're looking for are groups of files. They'll be the same color, and clustered together. Simply drag the mouse over them to see what they are. You can then determine what folder(s) they're in, and we can formulate a plan to clean them up.

If you still can't figure out what group of files is taking up the majority, I'll try to find an alternative program that can show me what I need to know in a log file format. Let me know what you're able to find, and we'll go from there.

Just in case you don't get any other useful information out of Windirstat, I've come up with another method for me to see what's going on:

I'd like to get a snapshot of what folders are storing data on your machine:
  • Please download DU from Microsoft, and save it to your desktop.
  • Extract all of the files from the downloaded package:
    • Right Click on DU.zip, the file you just downloaded. Choose "Extract All...".
    • The default location should be on your desktop, in the DU folder, which is what we want. Press Next.
    • Press Next again, then Finish.
    • You should now be looking at a folder with du.exe in it, and an end user lisence agreement that you may wish to read.
  • Open a command prompt: Click start, All Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt (or click Start, press Run, and type cmd in the box, and press enter).

At the command prompt, type cd desktop, and press enter. Next, type cd DU, and press enter.

Now, type this, and press enter when you're done typing. Spacing is important:
    du -c -v c:\ > out.txt

Click "Agree" to the box that comes up, then sit back and wait.

This should take a while to run, during which your hard drive activity light will be very active. Your machine may be almost unresponsive during this time, so please let it run undisturbed. When it's finished, it'll give you a C: prompt again, and blink quietly, waiting for you.

Close the command prompt after du is finished.

Right click out.txt and choose Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder. Windows will squeeze the bits out of our file, and leave you with out.zip, which will be much smaller than the likely very large out.txt file.

Please attach the out.zip file (located in your DU folder) to your next post.

Great, we have some progress!

Next, please follow these instructions:

Download OTL to your Desktop, if you don't still have it.
  • Double click on the OTL icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Press the "None" button. The button will change to say "Standard", which is what it should say for this scan.
  • Copy the text from the codeblock below (ctrl-c) and paste it (ctrl-v) into the Custom Scans/Fixes box.

    %USERPROFILE%\Downloads\*.* /s
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open one notepad window with a new OTL.Txt. This is saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of this file, and post it in your topic.

Hi Havredave,

Too much data to post as you suggested so here is an attachment instead containing the report.

Note this folder is most used by me to sort my files. Nothing to do with Windows operation files which is what actually causes the hard drive to jump up and down so much regarding freespace. That is probably a problem caused by system restore and temp files, memory caching, page caching etc.

Attached Files

  • Attached File  OTL.zip   87.64KB   98 downloads

Before I go through the attachment, you should know that the downloads folder is your problem. It's over 177GB, which is the lion's share of your hard drive space.

There is no infection, and Windows isn't gobbling up your hard drive space. In fact, Windows itself is using what I would expect it to use. Windows does use temporary data, but that really isn't the problem here.

Clear up your downloads folder, and your problem will go away.

If the issue happens again, check that folder first, then we'll dig more. See what you can do now, and let me know how it goes. I'll ignore going through your list of downloaded files at this time. :)
