1. Start, programs, accessories, system tools, system information.
It will open on the System Summary page.
Click the edit tab please, click select all.
click the edit tab again click copy
Open wordpad or notepad, right click and click paste - OR simply right click on the message reply panel here and then click paste.
If you use wordpad to paste the document -On your reply COPY and paste that please as the actual record not as a file which I have to open.

2. Run this please and send me the results

Please Run the PCPitstop.com OverDrive Full Tests

Here's how:

You must use your Internet Explorer for this procedure. (doesn't work so well in Firefox or others).

Go to: http://www.pCPitstop.com
Click on "Free Computer Check-up" listed below PC Pitstop OverDrive
In the User Login - Click on "Sign up FREE!" OR YOU CAN RUN THE TEST ANON. without signing up. - you will see that at the end of that screen. The results will still be saved long enough for me to look at them.
You'll need to submit a valid email address and create your own password, then click - Create Account(button)

Now enter your email address and password to Log in, Select - Scan this system Now!(button)
You will then be asked to download an ActiveX component and allow it to install.
It is safe and does not compromise your privacy.
Follow the on-screen prompts to install the ActiveX and to allow the Full Tests to be run on your machine.

The Full Tests take about 2 1/2 - 3 minutes on most machines.
When complete, a Results - Summary - Recommended Fixes will be displayed.

Please post the URL internet address, from your Results, back here into this Topic Thread so that we can review the configuration.

Note: During the graphics 2D and graphics 3D testing, your screen will display some rapidly moving objects.
If you are sensitive to visual flashing, it may cause dizziness. Therefore, look away from the screen during that portion of the testing.

While PCPitstop does offer a variety of Paid Products, the PCPitstop OverDrive testing is FREE. Please ignore the references to Paid Products. We prefer to provide manual solution instructions that you can apply directly to your machine.

PLEASE DO NOT RUN ANY other tests on offer

1. One of the first problems I notice and I am not saying it is the main cause is that you have BOTH - Norton360 and Lavasoft AdAdware installed

Lavasoft AdAdware SE personal despite its name is both an anti-virus and an antispyware - running on your computer.

You have had the Lavasoft for some years and unless you have updated it, or it has been done automatically, you need to pay attention to that.

Norton whilst I would not pass an opinion on its effectiveness does have somehwat of a reputation for cuasing quite a few problems.

The decision must be yours if you decide to uninstall Norton then use the Control Panel Add/Remove programs and then the Norton removal tool

https://www-secure.s...n=1&pvid=f-home

Here is the Lavasoft site if you decide to run with the Lavasoft
They offer a free Anti-antivirus and spyare edition
http://www.lavasoft....ts/ad_aware.php

You need to check the current situation with the one you have installed form the point of view of updates.
Whichever you decide - you should not continue with them both running.

2. You also need to update JAVA - Control Panel click on the Java icon.
Out of date JAVA is a serious security weakness, as is out of date Flash player and Adobe reader etc, exploited when you use those utilties to open items on the web.

3. Go start, run and type
cmd
when the window opens and at the prompt type
type
Cd/
you should now be on a C:\> prompt
then type
tasklist /svc >tasklist.txt

you will not receive any message
it will sim[ply return to the prompt -
type
exit

Then go to My Computer open C drive and you will have the txt file there.
COPY and paste the file please, not asd an attachment which I have to open.

. You have installed AOL computer check up - you installed it on the 29 Dec 2011
http://computercheck...35-ce5b722910b2

Please accept that this is NOT necessary or indeed EVEN desirable, whatever AOL`s marketing blurb may tell you, you DO NOT want registry cleaners, memory optimizers and make it go faster porgrams on your computer.

Many aspects of the program are provided by Microsoft in Windows eg. diskcleanup, disk defrag, clean browsing history in IE etc.

Many of the so called optimizers may not be included in Windows, but they are NOT there for the very simple reason that they stand a good chance of ruining your computer.

As I presume you have now used the 30 day free trial and have paid for it, the decision is yours, as indeed it must be, but I strongly advise that you uninstall it. Cancel your subscription and do not even consider its further use.

5. Please click
http://www.trendmicr.../HiJackThis.msi
to download and install Hijack
Create a Startup List

  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log"
  • Click on the button "Generate StartupList log"
  • Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do not fix anything

Then please go back to HiJack and this time, click Main Menu at the bottom, then click Miscellaneous tools which is top right, then click Open uninstall Manager, click Save List.
Copy and paste the list please.

PLEASE copy and paste both as actual open lists, not an attachment which I have to open.

NOTE - I am asking for HiJack ONLY for the startup items and the list of installed programs.
PLEASE DO NOT attach a general scan result. That is NOT allowed in this forum.

Post back with the details requested please and if you decide your decision regarding Norton and Lavasoft etc.

I can't get Java to update. It always prompts me to run the update, but it never works. Always shows "0% complete/"

Can't get this to work. Says, "tasklist is not recognized as an internal or external command, program, or batch file." I don't know if it's part of XP Home.

Sorry about that tasklist is not included in XP Home
Do this instead please
Download Process Explorer: http://technet.micro...s/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.

Send me the HiJack please

1. Please download autoruns from SysInternals
http://download.sysi...es/Autoruns.zip

Run the program that is the autoruns and click the Everything tab.
Now look for the entries marked in the right hand column of Image Path - file not found

ON EACH ENTRY UNCHECK the small box to the left, to take out the green tick.

Please do this, DO NOT select the delete option even if you are aware of it

You will have MANY of them, so it may be easier to click on the File tab on the top menu bar click Find
type
File not found
ensure match case is not checked, otherwise if you have a cap ltr wrong, it will not find the entries.

Work your way down the list.

Then click the File tab and click Save.
Note where you are saving the entry to.

Now click the file tab again and click exit.

2. Run a diskclean up

3. Run this please
http://www.geekstogo...er-by-oldtimer/
It will run without any requirement from you except to click Start.
Close all open windows to the desktop
It MAY take sometime on your system.
If you are susceptible to flashing graphics the small graphic on the top right does flash while it is running.

4. Download this and run this please
http://www.auslogics...efrag/download/
PLEASE DO NOT try anyother porgrams from Auslogics and run only the defrag please.
NOT the defrag and optimizer.
NOR run any other offered program after the defrag by clicking on the three entries at the nottom of the screen junk files, registry cleaner etc.

5. There is no NICE way to tell you this - unfortunately
YOUR system is in a mess.
Caused IMHO by the extensive use of registry cleaners, optimizers and make it go faster programs.
Uniblue registry cleaner
Unible registry optimizer
AOC complete care

and the apparent ( I may of course be wrong) failure to uninstall some utilties and programs no longer used correctly.
It appears to be that at one time you had Mcafee on your computer.

6. After doing that please post as to how you have gone on.
What decision did you reach regarding Norton please.
It is not the BEST for your system
It is a user of resources and at times most obtrusive of many of the programs on offer.

I think I am correct in saying you have uinistalled Lavasoft

After you have done this - there is still a lot more to do

After downloading and running autoruns.exe from the link, my computer locked up and was infected with a "system check" and/or "file integrity checker" virus. Many links on the main page disappeared. My computer barely runs and is hard to shut down or restart. I did not do anything on the computer but open geekstogo.com and download autoruns before I saw these "system check" prompts and my computer went crazy.

I know my computer is a mess. The AOL program seemed to coincide with the recent svchost.exe problems. I am by no means a computer expert and have obviously been sucked into using these stupid "speed up" programs by deceptive advertising. I stuck with Norton for now because I have some data backed up through them. (Maybe not a good reason).

I am sorry about that, but I can assure you that the cause, is NOT anything wrong with that download. The program is 100% trustworthy and is actually from here

http://technet.micro...ernals/bb963902

I simpy sent you the direct download link.

There is NOW only one course of action to take.
Secure your personal data by way of your documents, images and audio files

Go here and follow the advice in the link.
http://www.geekstogo...cleaning-guide/

Start a new topic in the Malware forum.

If you are unable to run the utility to provide an OTL log then please explain that in your post.
Include in your post a link to the thread please.
Please be patient they are very busy in the Malware forum.

IF after you have from them a clean bill of health and any problems remain, it may well be that the Malware expert will suggest that you come back here.

Good Luck

Thanks. I trust this site; it just happened to be that the timing of the virus pops-ups coincided with my use of that program, so I thought I'd mention that out of caution.

What a virus; that really did a number. I will do what you said and hopefully be able to pick up with the other issues in the near future.

Thanks for your help.
