Networking newbie needs help with basics
I am having trouble doing a fairly basic task. I have a windows Vista laptop. I am trying a setup to have some information on a local server on my laptop get downloaded by a voip device.
I have Microsoft IIS enabled and wish to set up a static ip address on my laptop. The voip will try to contact the number that I wish to assign to my local web server. I know I have to set up a static ip and have attempted to do this but not sure how to enter the ip address and subnet mask. When I try to enter the ip address i get an error message saying that i need to enter the subnet mask. How do I do this?
Also should the voip unit be set up as static or DHCP.
Further to this do I need to set up my web server with the IP address?
Thanks much for your help

Hi torbau,

To answer your question about how to find the Subnet Mask of your vista box, go to your command prompt and type 'ipconfig' with out the tick marks. That will show your Subnet Mask, Gateway and IP Address. If you type 'ipconfig /all' this will show a lot more.

This link How to to set a static IP has a good video that will be helpful for the Static IP process. Hopefully this will help you figure out the rest of your mission.
