Greetings, I have an HP Pavilion 7310 slimline minitower, 1.5 mhz Celeron proessor, 0.5g of memory, 250g drive, 225g free disk space, VM set at 756mb. Recently the drive starts thrashing after I start up and continues for 30 to 60 minutes, and can start again any time. I defragged the drive just in case, but no change. There are almost no apps on the machine, so it is hard to understand. And guidance would be appreciated.

Regards,

david

What anti-virus software do you use? It could be doing a scan.

Are you using any backup software, like Acronis True Image or online like Carbonite?

What does Task Manager / Processes tab show when this happens?

Download and install CCleaner from the following link: CCleaner - Standard

During installation, uncheck the option to install the Yahoo toolbar.

Start CCleaner. Click on Tools (ICON) and Select the following BUTTONS to create two (2) text files:

* Uninstall > Save to text file (install) – bottom right corner of app window
* Startup > Save to text file (startup)

Locate and open each saved file in the ‘Documents’ FOLDER:

* Copy and paste the contents of each file into your next post (2 files).

Sorry, I had to go away for a couple weeks.

I have Comodo Pro, but it appears that it is only firewall, so maybe no anti-virus software running.

No back up software.

Task Manager shows system idle process running at 90% percent for long periods.

You have a lot of stuff running at boot time that is not necessary. You can use msconfig to disable these.

Do you use languages other than English in MS Office? If not these can be disabled.

Yes HKLM:Run IMEKRMIG6.1 C:\WINDOWS\ime\imkr6_1\IMEKRMIG.EXE
Yes HKLM:Run IMJPMIG8.1 "C:\WINDOWS\IME\imjp8_1\IMJPMIG.EXE" /Spoil /RemAdvDef /Migration32

These also have to do with non-english language use:

Yes HKLM:Run MSPY2002 C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\PINTLGNT\ImScInst.exe /SYNC
Yes HKLM:Run PHIME2002A C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\TINTLGNT\TINTSETP.EXE /IMEName
Yes HKLM:Run PHIME2002ASync C:\WINDOWS\system32\IME\TINTLGNT\TINTSETP.EXE /SYNC

These can and should be disabled:

Yes HKLM:Run PCDrProfiler (PC Doctor - uninstall is a better choice in my opinion)
Yes HKLM:Run QuickTime Task "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
Yes HKLM:Run SunJavaUpdateSched "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_05\bin\jusched.exe"
Yes HKLM:Run TkBellExe "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
Yes Startup Common Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe

You also have Network Magic running. Do you use it?

Yes HKLM:Run nmapp "C:\Program Files\Pure Networks\Network Magic\nmapp.exe" -autorun -nosplash
Yes HKLM:Run nmctxth "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Pure Networks Shared\Platform\nmctxth.exe"

You also have very outdated versions of Java installed that should be removed. The current version is JRE 6 U31. Get it at java.com or use JavaRAto manage Java for you.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5 Sun Microsystems, Inc. 11/21/2005 151.6 MB 1.5.0.50
Java™ 6 Update 5 Sun Microsystems, Inc. 3/14/2009 114.2 MB 1.6.0.50

... more in my next post.

How does it behave if you boot to Safe Mode with Networking? If better then something is starting at boot that is causing the problem.

Advanced startup options - XP
Advanced startup options - Vista
Advanced startup options - Windows 7

Use msconfig to determine what is causing the problem

These are good tutorials on using msconfig in XP, Vista or Windows 7:
How to use msconfig in Windows XP
How to use msconfig in Windows Vista
How to use msconfig in Windows 7

Click on Start then Run, type msconfig and press Enter.
Click on the Startup tab, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Reboot and see if it runs better.
If yes then use msconfig to enable several items at a time till you find the culprit.

If no, start msconfig and click on the Services tab.
Check the Hide All Microsoft Services box, record what is currently starting then click the Disable All button.
Again, do a regular boot, see if it runs normal.
If yes then use msconfig to enable services till you find the culprit.

Once you've found the culprit, uninstall it or find out how to eliminate it from your system. Simply disabling it in msconfig is a temporary fix at best.
Enable everything else you disabled.

Note: You will get a message on reboot about using the System Configuration Utility. See here for how to prevent it from displaying in the future: How do I get rid of this msconfig startup error after making changes?

Thank you! Just cleaning off Network Magic, PCDoctor and some other crap has calmed my machine a lot. I am still getting some churn, not so much right at start up but 5 or 10 minutes after I start working. It is briefer and less intense that before, so all good. I will do a few more things based on your guidance.

Again, thanks very much!

One thing I don't see is any anti-virus software. If you don't have one I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials.

The disk thrashing after 5-10 minutes may be Windows Update.
