Help with PS3 Controller

My sons PS3 controller flashes red (all 4 lights) when it is not connected by USB, but,nothing happens when you press the PS button.
When the controller is connected to the usb cable the lights stop flashing & again, nothing happens when you press the ps button.
I have tried to reset the controller
I have now restored the PS3 (by using a mouse ) but still, nothing happens with the controller when you press the PS button.
It is now stuck and waiting to set up the sysytem
The whole unit is only two months old (frantically looking for the receipt) im hoping someone can help me pleeeeeease.
