I have a Sony Vaio PCG k25. ITs a "sometimers" I call it. Sometimes it will boot into windows an run for a bit then lock up,and sometimes it'll lock up before it gets into windows.
SPECS 2.8ghz,60g hdd,512 ram,15" screen. I cleaned fan and vent then wiped the hard drive first thing after getting it,installed windows xp pro (32bit) ran the scan disk. Still does the same thing.
My question, could it be the hard drive? I run this version of XP on my other computers with no problem at all.
Thanks Rascle

Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, try the Hitachi DFT CD Image version of the software

Thanks to Broni for the instructions

sorry for the delay on getting back. i have found somewhat of the problem on the vaio k25. its not showing the wireless lan in the device drivers, only when i install thie driverfrom the sony site,is when the laptop locksup, even when installing the driver. i removed the card, cleaned its contacts and done the board also. nothingchanged, it still locks when try installing the drover. My guess, and please correct me if i am wrong,is the wirellss card damaged and needing replace. Its running perfect untill i install the driver..
Thanks again for your time and knowledge

Try this:

Download DriverMax and have it scan your system. It will open their website with all the out of date drivers you can update. With the free version you can update only 2 drivers per day so if you have a lot of them it will take a few days to get everything updated. I have been using it for about 4 months now and like it better then any other utility out there for keeping my drivers up to date.

Thanks I must have been tired last night when I asked that. Should have looked at the topic title.
This is what threw me the loop:

i removed the card, cleaned its contacts and done the board also. nothingchanged, it still locks when try installing the drover. My guess, and please correct me if i am wrong,is the wirellss card damaged and needing replace. Its running perfect untill i install the driver..
Are you saying the adapter is external then?
Ideally the replacement should be the same make as that would make everything easier to install.

I thank you all for you input and suggestions, maybe one day ill be able to answer a few questions for someone on here :)
