I'm buying a new desktop system
Are the new 5400 rpm (green)variable speed hd ok?
Or only look for the 7200 SATA

Quality brands are yes however they are slower and may have a shorter warranty period.

Or only look for the 7200 SATA

A faster drive, most modern HDDs are the SATA type due to motherboard manufacturers phasing out IDE slots on their MBs.
