Welcome to GeekstoGo

8.10 Intrepid Ibex is an obsolete version is obsolete and you cannot upgrade
That said see this
https://help.ubuntu....ty/UpgradeNotes

A clean install is recommended.
However will the 8.10 itself load Grub etc.

1. You actually never answered my question as to if the 8.10 installation would load

2. Is the computer on which you have now uninstalled the 8.10 a UBUNTU installation ONLY or is it a dual boot with one of the Windows systems
If it is UBUNTU only then I siuggest you format the hard drive first and then install the 11.10 from download from here
http://www.ubuntu.co...ubuntu/download

3. I cannot understand, what exactly you are trying to say here.
I am sorry about that, but could you try and explain again HOW you are installing the 11.10 - is it from a CD, a USB drive or what.

What I cannot actually understand is "i DL from my other computer 11.10 etc"

4. Error 22 means that the partition on which you are trying to install Ubuntu could not be recognised.
It MAYBE
a. A failing hard drive
b. If a hard drive on which there is a recovery partition - that can cause it.

Ubuntu 11.10 and indeed the 10.04LTS use a different version of GRUB to the 8.10, if grub is still on the drive that is the likely cause.

With respect you NEED to answer the questions I ask, as I only have what you tell me to work with.

So please answer questions 1, 2 and 3 on my post 4.

it appears that you have deleted the partition that holds menu.lst - hence error 22,

my advice would be to use a live cd and delete everything, then start again

or, if you install any linux version then grub will be over-written by a 'newer' version (unless you use lilo)

or, if you install windows then ntldr or bootmgr (i believe its called in vista/win7) will over-write grub

grub is a very basic operating system that is installed in the first 512 bytes of a hdd,
this is called the mbr - master boot record

a live cd is a linux operating system (such as ubuntu) that can be used from the cd without installing to hdd,
it is a fully working system that runs in your memory
