Does the fix now button work in the Avast GUI ?
Go to add/remove programmes
Select Avast as if you are going to uninstall
From the menu that appears select "Repair"

And can you confirm that the right click menu still does not have an open with option

sorry i was feeding my son yesterday the open has been on my context menu it just isnt at the top any more and the only way i know how to move it to the top is by going to my cpu tools folder options file types advanced for file folder and file it does not have open on either of those advanced tabs and the 2 vlc commands are there but i cant remove them i fixed my avast like you said

okay so removing vlc and reinstalling gor rid of my context commands i then fixed the registry by setting the [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell]
(default) to "none" all of it seems to be fixed now thank you for all of your help
also all other problems stopped when i removed malwarebytes can you give me a good alternative

A reasonable alternative to MBAM is Superantispyware free
