I have a Dell 5150 Dimension computer that is six years old with a HL-DT-ST DVD+RW GWA4164B drive installed that has worked in the past but will not burn CD+R, CD-R or even CD+RW disks now. When viewing the drive with Windows Explorer without a disk in the drive, the description of the drive is "DVD_RW Drive" but when you put a DVD or even a CD+R disk in the drive, the description changes to "CD Drive".

When you try to drag video or audio files to the drive I get the message "Windows has encountered a problem copying these files, what do you want windows to do?". I've tried to repair the driver for the DVD drive but this does not solve the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Give this a try, see if it helps: CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device

Run the FixIt ...
