Hey, Im having some trouble with the about:blank Homepage hijacker, There is also some other problems but im unsure to what these are. Even when i turn my computer on its different ( i now no longer have the normal login page for XP it somes up with a small box asking for the user name and password.) Im not sure if this is jsut a setting i can change or if this is todo with the stuff thats infected my computer.

I have a few programs to deleate spyware..but they dont seem to be helping. I hope you can help. =)

IS your Limewire the latest version? earlier versions were riddled with malware.

When you installed messenger 3 plus did you select not to install sponser software?

Dowload the following program but do not run it yet

Cleanup

Set PC to show hidden files (click link if you do not know how)LINK

Reboot pc into SAFE MODE by tapping the F8 key whilst pc starts up, select SAFE MODE.

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked.

Now using windows explorer locate the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\ <<--entire folder
C:\WINDOWS\system32\appwiy.dll
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\fwrw\fwrwm.exe

Now run cleanup.

Reboot normally rescan with HJT and post the log back.

Regarding you XP in classic mode firstly do the following.

Rightclick on your desktop > choose properties > display properties and choose Windows XPstyle.
Click apply and OK.

No, I don't think you performed this in exactly the way I'm asking you.

You have to choose the tab 'display properties', not the tab 'Theme's'.
The tab display properties is the 4th one from left. There will be the ' "windows and buttons" menu in it where you can select Windows Classic or Windows XP-style.
Select Windows XP-style.

If you can't find the Windows XP-style in there -- only the windows classic, tell me afterwards.

Also check next:

Go to start > run and type: services.msc
Search in that list for themes and check if it's running. If not, click start the service.

I'l follow the instructions now. Thanks for the help. Limewire is the newest version yes. and about the messenger 3 plus i made sure i didnt get the sponser.

I have tryed that for windows classic and there is no choice for windows xp.

ok next part for windows classic problem

Open notepad, copy and paste next content (bold) in it:

dir C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Save this as look.bat ,choose to save as *all files and save it to your desktop.
Doubleclick on it and notepad will open with some text in it.
Copy and paste this in your next reply.

As I thought -- you're missing the luna.msstyles in that folder.

Let's fix this.
Meikiemoes uploaded a copy of her luna.msstyles, so download it here:
http://users.pandora...patchy/luna.zip

Unzip it and MOVE the luna.msstyles which is present in that folder you unzipped to this folder: C:\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\Luna
Don't move it to anywhere else than that folder!

When moved it there, rightclick on your desktop > properties ... and look if Windows XPstyle is now present again. Choose apply and OK.

If not, reboot first, and try again to select Windows XPstyle

Ok thanks, I have the xp style back. The other problem is when i log in ..The usual xp login screen does not appear jsut a black scream and a box asking for my user name and pass word..is this a setting that i can fix?

With regards your HJT log.

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. ;)

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
