Trying to play a game over LAN

Me and my brother are trying to play Battle for Middle Earth over LAN, him on the laptop and me on the PC. We're both using different serial keys. The PC is XP and the laptop is Windows 7.
I create a game and my brother is able to see it but when he tries to join it says "connection timed out". Does anyone know how to get this working?
The two computers are connected directly by network cable.

Please do not duplicate your topic. It makes more work for members and staff and could potentially get you mixed advice being given.
